How many think Combo DVDs will help if priced right?

Without getting into "fanboy" rants, how many truly think if "Combo" discs having one side with High Defintion and the reverse side having Standard Definition and they were priced around the same price as a normal SD DVD would help the public accept high definiton DVDs more easily and gradually change over?

I think it would be huge. Those who could afford a HD-DVD player would buy one after viewing the SD-DVD side to quell thier curiosity of the other side of the disc IMHO !

The combo discs (the sd side) do play in a standard dvd player correct ?

Yes they do. My brother borrows my combos and watched the SD side on his 360

Yes , they would.

That would be the whole idea behind them helping the transition to High Definiton, that way the people could buy their DVDs and still use them until they chose to step up to a new High Definiton DVD player (either HD DVD or Blu-Ray if possible).

I think Combo's can definetely help ease the transition. Blu-ray supporters like to point to the fact that regular DVD's will look better on Blu-ray players, so its a smooth transition. That simply negates all the existing investment someone may have in DVD hardware.

With Combo's, they can get all the benefits of HD DVD And DVD on the same disc and they don't need to replace all their existing hardware to watch their new purchases.

Here's a question though - with combo's, is one side HD DVD dual layer and the other DVD Dual Layer? I believe twins is 2 layers for HD DVD And 1 layer DVD, correct? Is 1 layer enough for a 3 hour DVD? Perhaps without extras? If not, it seems combo's are the only way they can do this.

Price the HD DVD/DVD combo at the same price as a DVD and don't make a DVD of the movie.

Then add some marketing blurb to the packaging that says you are getting a free HD DVD and all you need is an HD DVD player to see this movie in up to 6X the resolution of a normal DVD - HDTV required

Then let the BRD fanboys howl and scream; "unfair" when the software sales go to 98% to 2% for HD DVD over BRD just based on 1 movie title

I had similiar talks over at blu-ray.com. Some of the posters there mention the media and printing and state that its not possible at this time to print the 5 million or so copies one might need for this type of endeavor.

Any truth to this?

HD DVD uses the same pressing lines that DVD does. It is just a case of using a different Glass Master to actually press the discs and some small adjustments to the line to accomodate the HD DVD's.

You would have to press 10 million to do a 5 million run - the only thing I am not sure of is the machines that glues them together - THEY would have to be perfect and though there were issues with the process with Children of Men - it seems to be fixed as we have not heard about any problems lately on combos.

And why would BRD supporters give you ANY solid info on HD DVD . . at BRD.com - you have to be kidding me right?
