Christ, there you go again with the unsubstantiated "plucked out of the air" claims.

Can Sony win? Yes. will they? I don't have a clue and nor does anyone else.

just wanted to point out, that a new guy "resurrected" some decomposing threads and that the older posts are starting to smell funny already.

no need to get worked up about them imo.

BDA can win by Universal going over to Blu-Ray and WB going BD exlusive as well.

HDDVD can win by WB going exclusive, plus Disney and Fox jumping ship to HDDVD

They are both equally far fetched, and the only way I can see either side winning.

The more interesting question is what happens if WB goes exclusive to one orthe other? Does the one that loses WB start to lose ground and fade away over time?

Cheers,

This is exactly the "blindness" I was talking about the other day.

Hi Grant and welcome to HDF

I can speak from the HD DVD side - if WB went that way then the amount of studios would be about dead even - 3 majors each.

But what of the fallout from WB going exclusive to HD? How will the world view the fact that BD has lost 2 major studios and gained none.

It would not end the war IMO - just absolutely guarantee a stalemate. Then we woud have to wait for the cheap DF players . . . if they ever come.

Unless such a move would activate the shareholders of the other studios, like you were talking about before.

Welcome to the forum!

I do think which ever one loses Warner will slowly fade away unless they pull a rabbit out of their hat. There is so much at stake for Toshiba & Sony that I could see well over $500 million changing hands to produce a rabbit if/wehn Warner decides.

Funny, I buy my HD DVDs and rent BDs except for the 4 I own too!

Is there anyone here who doesn't think that WB knows exactly what is going on?

WB originally sided with HD DVD. Why? Because it's nothing more than a fancy DVD. There are almost 200 pressing plants around the world that make DVD's. ALL can press HD DVD's with a simple tooling change.

There are how many BD pressing plants? 10? And how many of those are successfully pressing out BD50's? I have heard 1 - Terra Haute - Sony. And the yields are supposedly at 80%

DVD and HD DVD rrun at 95%+ and here is another little wrinkle . . .

You can reuse the 5% rejects - Grind them up and add them to the plastic to make new HD DVD's.

BD's that are rejected MUST be thrown away due to the coating polluting the new plastic mix.

David Vaughn verified this for me.

How many of those BD50's are movies, and not games or recordables?

Was it last month or October when Sony announced they had pressed their 1 millionth BD50?

And we all asked the same question . . .

"Does that include rejects?"
