Default Planet Earth #3 on Amazon

That pretty much speaks for itself. Nearly seven weeks after release, not only does it exhibit incredible staying power, but sets another record in the Amazon rankings.

It really has got alot of staying power hasn't it? Also dominating Blu Ray sales on Amazon. Continuing to extend it's lead in highest revenue for a HD title.

I think the HD DVD will eventually pass the #1 Blu-ray title (Casino Royale?) in units sold someday, because of it's staying power. I wonder what the record on Amazon is for # of weeks to peak position after release?

Obviously this title is selling players.

I stole this post from another site. Just thought it funny.

It's heading
Sad stuff (why the PE HD DVD is doing so well on Amazon)

By Tewfik Benredjeb "Tewfik" (Minneapolis) - See all my reviews
I had to return the HD DVD because i don't have a HD DVD Player.I reordered Planet earth's DVD with no problem.I received my credit. The service was fast and good.Thank you. This was my 1st order thru Amazon.com and it would'nt be the last.

By Justin M. Griffin - See all my reviews
I am mainly writing this out of disgust for the stupidity of some people. This is an excellent program with some of the best HD visuals you will see currently on the market. For those of you stupid enough to not understand that you must have an HD player to play an HD DVD...well... go back to your caves and get a clue! It has noting to do with the show so why would you give an excellent program a bad review because you are to stupid to buy the right format...hey I got a bunch of VHS tapes if you wanna try those on your DVD player...

By Elaine E. Paasch - See all my reviews
Real rating is a minus 30! I was unable to access the DVD on ANY player! I took it to Best Buy, and they said it will not work in any player they have in stock and are unable to program any player to play the DVD. It was a total waste of money and a horrible experience with Amazon because they will not help in any way to correct the problem.

By Charles A. Jacques "Tony" (S.C.) - See all my reviews
I Purchased the HD DVD to finf out that it would not work in my DVD Player. I could not return It because it was opened but not used. How are you supose to know it a thing works if you don't open it. So your return is not worth a dime! I ored the regular DVD and Found that all one needs is DVD one. The outher four DVD Has the same things as on the first DVD.

By Dwight F. Entwistle (satellite beach, florida United States) - See all my reviews
I ORDERED THIS ITEM WITH GREAT ENTHUSIASM. MUCH TO MY SURPRISE, MY DVD PLAYER COULD NOT PLAY AND IT AND I WAS ADVISED TO CONTACT THE MANUFACTURER FOR "FIRMWARE OR SOFTWARE" UPDATES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS OF NO HELP AT ALL BECAUSE, AS IT TURNED OUT, THEY DO NOT MAKE THE NECESSARY HARDWARE. SO FAR, I HAVE HAD TO BUY A NEW "BLUE LASER" DVD PLAYER AT A COST OF $500 (AND AT THAT I AM BETTING ON HD DVD AS OPPOSED TO BLU RAY) PLUS A $138 REMOTE TO PLAY THE HD DVD WITH MY EXIXTING HD TV AND MY CURRENT $600 AV RECEIVER SO I WON'T HAVE TO SPENT $800 OR MORE FOR A MORE ADVANCED AV RECEIVER. OF COURSE I COULD HAVE RETURNED THE PLANET EARTH DVD SET AND GOTTEN A REGULAR RED LASER SET FOR POSTAGE COST, BUT I WAS CURIOUS ABOUT THE "NEWEST" TECHNOLOGY. WHAT'S NEXT? ALL THIS IS JUST VENTING! THANKS FOR LISTENING. POINT: I DO FEEL YOU SHOULD HAVE INCLUDED A CAVEAT SOMETHING LIKE "THIS HD DVD SET WILL NOT PLAY ON YOUR CURRENT DVD PLAYER. PERIOD!!" YOU WOULD BE CORRECT 99.9+% OF THE TIME.

By T. Shelton - See all my reviews
I thought since I have a high def TV that this would work but apparently you have to have a high def DVD player to play this dvd. I couldn't use or play this so I had to return it. I will be buying the regular dvd though.

By Francesca Matterhorn "skeptic" (WA) - See all my reviews
Thanks to Amazon's pathetic scheme, I now own an HD DVD format piece of plastic. It was very deceiving of them to have the HD formatted DVD as the first choice in a search on this series. So I'm out almost $80 because I took the plastic off... I now know that an HD DVD is not only a different format, but is being compared to laserdiscs, so don't bother buying this version of Planet Earth or an HD DVD player for that matter.

By Jeffery C. Ottesen "Jeff" (Juneau, AK) - See all my reviews
I've given the Planet Earth DVD 5 stars because the cable broadcast of the work is so compelling. I can only wait to actually see it in High Definition. Alas, that is the rest of this story.

Owning a shiny new HD TV (Sony Bravia) and a tenured DVD player I opted to purchase the HD version of the Planet Earth series. Here is where I made my mistake (and Amazon too!)

I did not understand that only HD DVD players can play a HD DVD. Your ordinary DVD player simply can't read the new technology on the HD DVD. Period.

OK, it does say so, in the very fine print on the back of the DVD case. Why with 10X reading glasses I might have even noticed. But no where on the ordering process on teh Amazon web site is this requirement brought to my attention.

Sure, snicker, you video-philes who are early adopters and know this implicitly. But trust me, I have talked to at least a dozen people who like me didn't have a clue. And not one person I have discussed this with was aware of the DVD shortcoming with HD DVD format.

So the numbers are high because stupid people bought them?

These are the same people that buy a HDTV and think running the cable coax cable to the TV gives them HD from their SD source. There are ignorant people everywhere in the world but if we always use the least common denominator to make/sell things, then we will all still be living in caves.

You mean the majority of PS3 owners? Because Sony ship a Composite cable with the console? :P For the TRUE HD EXPERIENCE! :P

I'll give in that there is a chance that a lot of people bought Planet Earth HD DVD without an HD DVD player simply because they thought it would work in their DVD players, but not enough to keep it this high as usual.

If that were the case all HD DVDs would be rated as high. People would want to watch the HD DVD Matrix with their DVD sets to, as well as Bruce Almighty, Troy, Serenity, etc. . .

PE was not a magical exception to the rules of ignorance.

I forgot that they did not include a HDMI cable with the PS3. They should at least include a cheapo HDMI or component cable with it.

Maybe that is why Best Buy seems to favor BD at many stores. It gives them an opportunity to sell a $180.00 (must have ) Monster HDMI cable with the huge profit margins for the stores.

Damn right that $180 Monster HDMI cable is a must have, especially for the few people who really like Monster stuff. I do agree as they are going to support whathever allowed them to increase their margins. I don't know if it's still true, but I even remember that the first gen HD-DVD players even shipped with an HDMI cable in the box.

I find the fact that an HD-DVD is continuiing to set these records amazing on Amazon. Dumb people might be buying it by accident, but doesn't it count against HD-DVD when it's returned back to Amazon for a refund? My copy of Planet Earth will be arriving tomarrow and I can't wait to check out this must have title.

It's funny, but that's all it is. Nielson Videoscan backs up Amazon's incredible Planet Earth HD DVD performance as last week it almost outsold one of the Pirates movies and was easily the best selling HD DVD. The reason it does so well on Amazon is because they discount it a lot more than at the B&Ms. I think it's not even discounted at all at Best Buy (although that may not be the case now, I rarely go there anymore). So while it's no big deal to pay a few bucks more for a title at a B&M (for example $30 at BB vs. $24 at Amazon for Pirates), it's a huge deal to shell out an extra $20-$30 for a disc set ($100 at BB vs. $67 at Amazon) especially since it's expensive no matter where you buy it.

Another reason is because the HD DVD version is moving players (ie, people are buying into HD DVD just for Planet Earth)

Top 10 HD sales (week ending June 10)
1. Appocolypto 100
2. POTC: DMC 98.55
3. POTC: CBP 84.33
4. Planet Earth HD DVD 82.27
5. Norbit BD 77.78
6. Blood Diamond 74.95
7. Planet Earth BD 62.17
8. The Messengers 51.05
9. Casino Royale 44.44

I'd rather see bad reviews based on people being stupid. Unlike the following blu-ray reviews of Planet Earth.

This is a review of blu-ray edition, not of the contents.

I was expecting the quality to be superior to all other BBC documentaries that I own. I was disappointed miserably, to the point that I feel compelled to write my first online review.

Equipment: Sony PS3 feeding a 46 inch Sony Bravia 1080P, through premium HDMI cable.

The good: Colors are stunning, and some shots, specially the ones from space, are absolutely breathtaking.

The bad: Many grainy scenes. Quality varies. Some shots are as good as my DVD edition of Blue Planet. Some are better, and some are worse. A lot worse. In fact, in some scenes grain is so bad that if it were a movie, I would have thought it is done on purpose for the artistic effect. Somehow I had the impression that the master for this series was high def digitial, but it sure seems that quite a bit of it was film.

The terrible: Here is something I had not seen before. Flicker. Huh?? On flyover scenes of waterfalls, screen starts flickering with a rising tempo. As we pass over the falls and look back at the falling water, flicker turns into a 'snow' screen that flashes at about 1 sec intervals. This is so bad that I am hoping I have a faulty component somewhere. :-(

In summary: If you are thinking about buying the blu-ray edition for video quality, it might be better to rent it first to see if you have the issues that I did.

----------------------

Follow up: Based on suggestions of others, I played with connection, TV adjustements, noise reduction setting, and resolution settings. This is definitely a 1080P issue. At 720p, the problem is not present at all. At 1080i, the problem is present but almost unnoticeable. At 1080p problem is very obvious. The most annoying scene is disk 1, episode 3, as we fly over Angel Falls and look back. I can pause the picture and single frame advance to a frame that the 'snow' is very prominent. While picture is paused here, I can change resolutions, and see the noise only in 1080p. Since I do not have another blu-ray player, nor another TV, I cannot conclusively blame the disk. But I have had this problem only with this disk.

Wait for a better transfer and more features, April 30, 2007
By C. Helsel (South Florida, USA) - See all my reviews

I was eagerly anticipating the release of this series and it is quite stunning to watch some scenes, however the quality is not up to my expectations. Honestly, Fantastic Four was a better transfer... Many scenes are extraordinarily grainy, e.g. Freshwater (Disc 1, Title 4, Chapter 1, 1:30-1:45)

Second, it would be nice to have the option of selecting alternate narrations... the Attenborough narration is a little monotone and he sounds out of breath most of the time... apologies to any Attenborough fans.

Missing special features on Blu-Ray compared to DVD... come-on... what kind of half-baked nonsense is this? You're supposed to sell us on the Blu-Ray capabilities not give us LESS (I know we get more pixels... I'm not talking pixels... I'm talking minutes of video content).

My setup: PS3 HDMI to Samsung 40" LCD 1080i

The BD fans HATE that fact that PE HD DVD is still in the Amazon Top 10!

Every time they pull out that Amazon Top 10 selling price graph and scream, "See BD titles are cheaper!"

They get called out on the carpet and explained to that for BD it is 10 titles . . . but because of PE - it's like 12.3 titles due to Amazons $66.50 price.

Another "we are the best" argument shot down in flames.

Don't forget that TWO different box sets of the Matrix series at a high price are also included in showing HD DVD disc prices higher.

Amazon SHOULD be averaging the price for EACH movie in box sets IMO so that the Disc price charts are actually relevent.

From a company standpoint. a #1 title on the market by one company, compared to a company with a #2,3,4,5,6,7,8, and 9 on the market, Id have to go with the second company.

While having a #1 title is good. you'd like to see more consistancy as a consumer of more than one title.
