Default hd or blue ray

two formats which one do you go for , ive noticed the new releases are edging towards blue ray , but a lot of the old films are being re-released on hd but not on blue ray.
for example rocky balboa is only released on blue ray , so you would have to buy the standard version to play it on hd player, looks like a waiting game to see if it settles down and one format wins.

Samsung has announced a dual format player scheduled for the 4th Quarter this year. It is stupid beyond belief that we have two formats for the same thing, but playing both is what I have decided to do. A good case can be made to only support Blu-ray since it is the only one of the two to have any chance to win. Both survive and expect a rather poor showing from both is my best guess.

Typical answer from our beloved Mr. FUDD. A good case can also be made for HD DVD with its more complete format. The dual format player won't be a good solution, at least not the first gen of them. From what I understand, they won't fully utilize the HD DVD capabilites.

You should tally the number of Clint Eastwood movies that are available in each format and decide from there.

That limitation is only present in the LG model. The Samsung model should have full support for both formats.

I think if doing that, the OP would choose HD DVD since I believe More Clint Eastwood movies will becoming out on HD DVD from what I remember.

Clint is my favorite actor and I am very happy that he didn't take the advice of the director on his first screen test who said he would never make it as an actor because of his squinting eyes.

And Borromini is correct that the limitation is only with the LG model and LG has another full featured DF player in the works right now. The Samsung 1G DF player will be full featured. I just hope they use the Silicon Optix REON chip in it and not some lower end one for the at best "fair" upscaling they are infamous for with their SD upscalers.

Default more hd

as tvs are advertised as hd ready and not blue ray ready , i think i will ask my film company to release all my old films in this format. as these films were made years before ps3 blue ray was even thought of its possible i could have some new royalties.
seriously , depending on what film you want on dvd it will be up to film companies how they release them , forcing you to choose one format or another . hd seems a stronger disc , but blue ray has more space and that better quality if you go for full 1080 at a price .
with disney backing b/r will pirates of carribean be released in b/r or both should interesting to see with such a big film

BD does NOT have better PQ. That "Full HD" talk is more marketing than anything else. Experts have already stated that as long as the 1080p display properly deinterlaces the signal there will be no difference in PQ since the HD DVD discs are all encoded at 1080p also. No info is lost and besides, TWO of the HD DVD players currently out DO in fact output 1080p.

I own both formats and PQ is finally very close, but I still give the edge to the HD DVD movies on average, but it is very close now.

HD DVD has superior mandatory features such as TrueHD and Dolby Digital Plus decoding, persistent storage and networking support for web-enabled features and firmware updating. HD DVD is also region free so you can buy virtually any HD DVD from anywhere in the world and it will play in your HD DVD player.

By the way, the mandatory TrueHD and DD+ decoding is really playing in HD DVD's favor. For example, look at some of the films that are out on both HD DVD and Blu-ray. Releases such as Flags of our Fathers, The Fountain, Dreamgirls, Mission Impossible I, Mission Impossible II, Mission Impossible III, Payback: Straight Up The Director's Cut, Happy Feet, Superman Returns, Babel, Lady in the Water, The Ant Bully, Phantom of the Opera, AND OTHERS have the better soundtrack on the HD DVD version since they have either TrueHD or Dolby Digital Plus @ 1.5 mbps, whereas the Blu-ray version only has Dolby Digital at 640kbps. As for picture quality, I give the slight edge to HD DVD, which is one of the many reasons I decided to support it. To top it all off HD DVD is less expensive to buy than Blu-ray. All things considered, HD DVD is the winning format.

By the way, future titles such as "300" and "Blood Diamond" will have superior extras on the HD DVD version.
