Question HD DVDs & Blue Ray DVDs?

Hello. I am VERY new at this HD stuff. MY husband and I just bought a Sony 50in. plasma flatscreen TV. I have a ton of "regular" DVDs and was going to "throw up" if I had to get rid if all of them for the new HD/Blu Ray. So for that reason we bought a Panasonic VHS/DVD recorder up-converter. The new HD DVDs and Blu Ray DVDs, can they be played on the up-converter (780p/1080i, i think it's called) we bought ($350!, jeez) or do we have to have an HD DVD player or a Blue Ray player?

Hi,

no you can't, but if you bought an HD-DVD player or selected Blu-Ray player your old standard definition DVDs would have been able to play on it.

You can not play Blu Ray or HD DVD movies on your upconverting player. I would suggest returning your Panasonic and buying an HD-A2 HD DVD player. You can get one for about $250 dollars and it will upconvert your standard definition movies to 1080i better than the Panasonic. (It upconverts very well). Then you can use the extra $100 from your return to buy a High Def movie or two. I know you will be happy you made the switch.

You won't have to replace your SD movies unless you have some, like I did that just begged for HD. As has been posted, the Toshiba HD DVD players upconvert very well with the HD-XA2 model being very good at upconverting.

By the way, welcome to the forums and the world of HD. Now there is no going back

Plus you get 5 free HD DVD's with the purchase of a Toshiba HD DVD player (via mail) so as is pointed out - take that $100 and go buy 4 movies at CC or BB (5 at amazon) and presto - you will have 9 HD DVD's to start your collection - and get a great upconverting DVD player as well.

If you plan on watching VHS on that brand new Sony HDTV - my advice . . .

Drink ALOT before you plug in a tape!

A Sony plasma TV? Do you live in North America? Sony stopped making them for the North American consumer market about 2 years ago. What is the model number? Does it have an HDMI input? This is important if you wish to upconvert SD DVDs.

Upconverting players can upconvert SD DVDs via an HDMI connection but usually can only output SD (480i or 480p) via a component-video connection.

HD DVD and Blu Ray players also require an HDMI connection to upconvert SD DVDs. However, they can output 1080i from an HD disc via a component-video connection.

I agree. You should buy a Toshiba HD-A2. It will do a better job at upconverting your regular DVDs than the VHS/DVD upconverter, and it will play all the HD DVDs as well.

Default Upconverting vs HD DVD

I agree with all that has been said. One more reason to go to an HD format is that not only is the PQ better but the sound is also very much better than in the SD formats. My wife and I are working our way through Planet Earth in HD DVD and we are amazed at both PQ and SQ. I think both are equally significant improvements and make the decision to upgrade a very good one.
