HD DVD: Still the best!

By new releases, I mean NEW RELEASES. Not more catalogue tiles. Each week there are at least 5 new major films released on DVD. Why aren't some of these ready for HD DVD and Blu-ray as well. This, above all else is starting to annoy me. I mean, I have to think that is a big part of why neither format is gaining impressive marketshare in home video. I mean, it might help if Joe Everyman could walk down the New Release aisle at his local store and see a Blu-ray or HD DVD version of the new releases as well. Instead, Joe probably thinks, "Gee, I will still have to keep buying regular DVD's for new releases, that sucks!"
Does anyone know why both formats are going back catalogue heavy and forsaking some of the bigger new releases? I, personally, am not as excited to "re-buy" a bunch of old titles in HD, as I am to get a brand new movie to add to my collection, even if it has to be SD DVD. Recently, I've come across quite a few new SD DVD releases that can only be displayed with a 480p max resolution on my HD-XA2. I get a warning to that effect when I pop in some of the new SD DVD releases. I am running full HDMI too. Is there any question that both formats wouldn't see greater growth if more new releases were available at the same time as the SD DVD counterpart? What's going on?

It should improve for HD DVD later this year...maybe they're trying to address the recent hacks.

Blu-ray is supporting Day and Date to a greater extent than is HD DVD. This has been something I've seen for a long time due to Universals poor Box Office 2006 results. Not many blockbusters in Universals pipe for Day and Date, just catalog stuff. This is a trend that is continuing into 2007 for Universal in early 2007 so they rely on their extensive catalog. To me, catalog is blah because I'm not going to re-purchase many titles that I already have on DVD. Only a few here and there. Day and Date is huge for me and Blu-ray has a better selection due to their supporting studios.

Yeah, I think this is why Blu-ray is so much more appealing to me of late. The thing is, who cares if the film was a blockbuster? HD DVD is putting out a lot of films that are very suspect, even the catalogue releases. Sure a lot of them may have been big budget at the time, but my god, some of the titles just universally suck. I mean, Waterworld.... Sure the movie probably has a fan base, but I can think of a 100 other films that more people would want thatn Waterworld. The other thing is, who cares if the film was a Blockbuster? I buy tons of movies that weren't necessarily runaway smash hits. Even though Blu-ray is coming out with more new release titles than HD DVD, they are still lacking. I love movies, and I'll watch the same movie over and over and over again. I'll go through all the special features, and I'll watch the movie with all the commentaries. I find it all interesting. I probably buy on average 5 movies a month. However, I am still buying like 4 SD DVD's to one HD film because I buy primarily new releases currently.

But basically everything is new if you've never seen the movie, and there are thousands of good catalog movies I don't have and have never seen. And just because it comes out now doesn't mean it is better. Anyway, Universal will be releasing quite a few day and date this year.

I am not saying that new movies are better than old. But most people have some pretty nice editions of these movies on DVD, now they have to put out another $25 for an updated HD version? I think the best bet is to get movies out that have never been on video before, so people won't have to worry about double dipping left and right and wind up with a worthless extra copy. I have 400 something DVDs and don't feel the need to begin replacing them with HD versions, I rather buy one movie one time.

Nobody wants to double dip, but even with as many DVDs that I have, it's not hard buying HD DVDs that I don't have the SD version of. Most people don't have 100's of DVDs that could deter them from double dipping anyway. Having said that, about 1/3 of my HD DVDs are double dippers, but as long as I keep hold it down to about 20% (hey, some movies are just worth it), then I can live with that.

It is important to know WHO is buying HDTV's and HD Disc players. here is an article that claims Baby Boomers are the #1 cat. for these purchases. Many do want to "relive" the past and older movies bring back good memories.

My wife will sometimes buy a kid movie upon release even if it is not on sale.

The whole "new" movie difference between BD and HD DVD isn't as big as people try to make it out to be.
A lot of this years biggest movies are going to be found on both like: 300, Sherk 3, Harry Potter, Transformers, Ocean's Thirteen, Rush Hour 3 etc.. And HD DVD will have it's share of exclusives as well like: Evan Almighty, The Bourne Ultimatum, American Gangster etc... |

QUOTE] I guess I just have too much disposable income too young. It sucks. I am really starting to feel like no one is marketing to me. I don't have and don't want a PS3, so I am missing out on BD. Plus, I already own all the worth-having titles that HD DVD has to offer on recent re-mastered editions of SD DVD.

So if you have disposable income dispose of it by re-buying the HD DVD versions of those movies that are already released in HD DVD. Either that or give some to me so I can replace mine.
![]() I can guarantee that it will look AND sound better on HD DVD and then you can ebay the SD DVD versions, or give them to friends. There. Problem solved.

Despairado, you sound like you won't be able to wait for the perfect BD player, so you may as well jump in and get the Sammy or a PS3 until that player comes along (unless you know of a BD player that you want that will be released soon). It pains me to hear to pine for the BD movies, so do yourself a favor and satisfy that growing hunger inside you for BD movies.
