Lucas (as well as spielberg) is very cautious when it comes to new formats, and will wait until there is a market. In the case of BD and HD DVD, they'll wait until there is a winner, and then see if the market responds and adopts that one format. I'd say not to expect a Star Wars HD disc set for another 3 years.

The movies are available in HD on Cinemax though. Episodes 1-3 were filmed in HD, and 4-6 have been remastered in HD, so HD versions of the movies exsist, just not in BD or HD DVD.

The movies will be avalible on a new 30th anniversery DVD this year with additional changes. So far the only change confirmed is that The Phantom Menace puppet Yoda will be replaced by a digital model. The puppet in the original trilogy will not be completly replaced. For some reason the digital Yoda in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith actually looks more like the original puppet then the Phantom Menace Yoda so this change is welcome for me. Most likely though this release will be standard definition only unfortunitly but Im keeping my fingers crossed.

So other than this release...there are no signs of a HD version on either format? I mean when they launched the entire series on CinemaxHD,it was hyped all over. I mean billboards on the highway, commercials and stuff...you would think they realize the potential of HD release.

I believe Godson that you forgot how long it took to get Star Wars on DVD. If I remember it was about 3 or 4 years after the intro of DVD.

Lucas wants your money. But he thinks in hundreds of millions not thousands.

He doesn't want to sell 10,000 HD DVD's. he wants to sell at least 2 or 3 million. . .which is probably where HD DVD ( I mean Hi Def) will be in about 3 years.

HIS movies are the last to be released.

Certainly agreed. he should be on board and looking to aide these young formats with his movies being released. It could do wonders for the publicity.

The only "format" Lucas was ever interested in birthing or "helping along" was his own ...THX

Well, Ive read here and there that Lucas prefers BD over HD DVD. So I was just wondering.

Aside from the Yoda treatment, they were supposed to be fixing the lightsabers to match the new trilogy, and a couple other things.

Of course you're entitled to your own opinion, but why in hell should he get invlolved in this Hi-def mess??? HE should aide these formats? Laughable!
As someone already mentioned, he will release when the time is right for HIM.

Are you gripping cause the movies are letterboxed? They should be as all use the 2.35/2.40 Aspect Ratio.

If you saw them in 1.78 (HD Asp. Ratio) you would be losing 30% of the image. In essence it would have to be Pan and Scan (UGH!)

I was very pleased that they were letterboxed. Many of the HD content providers DO NOT show full image 2.35 Panavision shot movies. They show some bastardized version that is 1.78, destroying the directors and DP's intentions on whay you the viewer should see.

On DVD we have 2 choices: Widescreen (2.35) and Full Screen (1.33). Now we have a third...1.78. Not Good!

Actually, only episodes 2 and 3 were shot in HD. Episode 1 was still in 35mm, I'm pretty sure. When it was filmed, HD was still not very well respected/developed. I really wish people wouldn't film in HD; it's so bad for the future of the films; when UHDV comes out, they'll all look completely dated; film, on the other hand, will still look better in UHDV than it does in HD.

We've long since had 1.78 and 1.85 as well. 1.85 is in fact a bit more common aspect ratio in film than 2.39 (what you call 2.35, and others call 2.40). Not a LOT of films are made in 1.78, though, but some are. But I'm totally with you on widescreen letterboxing. I definitely don't want to see either my 2.39 images stretched to the top and bottom, or the sides cut off. However, I wish there was some sort of system by which the television itself could detect how much letterboxing was needed, instead of having the mandatory black bars built into the film; some people do have 2.39 ratio screens, believe it or not.
