Cost is a small reason I hate flippers. My hate of flippers is my big problem not the price. I like disc art and flippers are a pain to figure out what side is what. Thats why most elaberate DVD sets are two discs not a flipper even though flippers would be cheaper.

I always liked flippers when I first started buying DVDs. WB had widescreen and fullscreen which I thought was so cool. I took it as 2 for the price of 1 basically. (I only had a 4:3 TV at the time but 2 years later bought an HDTV)

Maybe Universal can include an insert in lieu of the cover art?

Jimmy, they actually do a very good job of letting you know which side should be face up to watch the HD-DVD side, unlike most of the SD DVDs that had both AR on either side of those discs.

That always bothered me with the SD DVD flippers, but like I said, it is not an issue knowing which side is which with the HD-DVD combos.

Bruce's suggestion would solve the remaining issue too. Then you can read the cover art while the disc is in the player. How much time could anyone spend looking at the art of a disc anyway? I would rather watch the movie.

I keep looking over the list of titles, and just keep getting pumped up! Children of God, which I know is still out in theaters, will be right up on the top of my list when it finally gets released - it's IMPOSSIBLE for us to see any movies in theaters now, as our son is 16 months old.

And have I mentioned Scarface? Whoo-hoo!

Children of Men - I didn't enjoy the book; it was written by P D James, better known for contemporary British mysteries. She is a great writer but this is not one of her better efforts as she isn't a SciFi writer. Nevertheless will view the movie with interest.

Pride and Prejudice - A beautifully filmed movie with a fantastic score. Unfortunately it strays considerably from the book which is much more closely followed by the BBC 1996 version - however that is four hours long so doesn't need to compress the story.

Brazil - a winner for me, the SD version does include all footage as the director intended but is not anamorphic.

I look forward to all these in HD

Wow, I'm glad I never got around to buying that Hitchcock box set from Universal! As for the Criterion one, I *so* own that and no, you can't have it. Ha ha ha!!!!!

As for Brazil, I hope it will be Gilliam's edit, the same used for the Criterion DVD. Anybody know which edit Universal used for their own DVD?

Although, given their commitment to film-maker involvement (which *really* excites me about this format) I'd be shocked if they didn't release Gilliam's edit.

Then again, WB cropped Full Metal Jacket, so who knows?

Do you think HD DVD is the only format to have filmmaker approved transfers? Sony and Fox (and probably more that I'm unaware of) both often consult DP's and directors on the quality and integrity of the master and how it relates to original intent and HD.

I wonder what Luc Besson thought of The Fifth Element release...

I used to know the story behind that transfer but I'm having trouble remembering it. I know that master didn't originally come from Sony, pretty sure it came from France. It's not the same as the one used for the Superbit DVD. Do a search at AVS if you want the whole story.

The damn French... I should have known...

Well, then - I guess Sony's off the hook, huh? I'm sure all of the people who bought TFE, thinking it would be reference like the SD DVD version was, are all satisfied with the "French Master" explanation...

Well if you'd read the interview you'd see the involvement that excites me is more than just the approval of the sound and picture, it's about the extras and interactive portions of the release, too.
