Thats why I just bought an upconverting DVD player. I'll get to see Blazing Saddles and Caddyshack in psudo HD, and that will be good enough for me.

I kind of agree with Joe here Stew.

I have my queue loaded up with HD movies and the SD DVDs are always moving further down as new HD movies come to the top.

The only SD DVDs I usually buy now are the kids movies, since they do not have BD players in their bedrooms, and they like to watch them many times in the bedrooms.

I am torn which format to buy movies in (SD, HD or BD) and since I have such little time right now I just haven't bought ANY for myself. We did buy The Bee Movie on SD though this past week.

Since I do have a second BD player now in my bedroom, I do not have to listen to the wife complain she cannot watch the movie in our bedroom now. This may be the deciding point to buy all movies in BD (except kids movies) going forward.

I have even double dipped on about 15 of my favorite movies so far in HD. There are probably another 20-30 I would double dip on and give the SD version to charity/my church.

I will say I almost didn't come into this thread because I knew it was an older thread brought back from the dead but was pleasantly surprised that everyone is being "good" and having civil discussions. Nice change for the better if only it could last.

You make a good point. Since getting into BD, I've been thinking BD only, but my kids tv doesn't have BD on it. In fact it's an old 27" CRT with no component even. Until I get them a better player, I may have to stop thinking BD only and get their movies in DVD. I double dipped Cars on BD (already had the DVD) because I loved it. And I'll probably double dip all the Pixar's since I am a big fan and the Pixar movies look unbelievable on BD. But otherwise, I'll probably limit the BD's to our movies and get the kids DVD.

NP, for me, there isn't enough releases in HDM that I want to see (that I don't already have)... and not released fast enough.. which is what I was getting at. .. but I don't use Netflix and never will again.

Anyway.. to me, everything does not need to be in HD.

I agree that if it comes down to SD or nothing, SD is a much better choice.

I sure hope the studios get it out of 1st gear now that the format war is over, but it seems they are actually releasing less so far.

Does anyone have the BD release count for the 1/1-3/31/07 period compared to the same period in 2008?

If you (or anyone else) wants to take the time . . . here is where the data resides:

http://www.blu-raystats.com/stats.php

If you click on "released" it will put them lasted to earliest so you can count them easier.

PFC5 - got into a discussion over at AVS concerning BD and it became very useful for me to know the number of BD titles released Q1 2007 versus Q1 2008. The number (give or take a few) is 72 . . . for both Q's.

But the number of BD players in the wild is drastically different from Q1 2007 to Q1 2008.

You would think they would be releasing more movies because of the larger player pop. Nope didn't happen that way.

Used the data in the link above and the future release dates for the rest of March from HDD.

I don't know what else can/needs to be released on HDM right now.

Personally, I want the Alien Quadrilogy SOOOOOOOO bad. I don't know what the hell is keeping that up.

I know some members want to see classic catalog titles released, but studios aren't getting anything from them. Casablanca didn't set the sales charts on fire. Neither did Mutiny on the Bounty. Both are great films of course. But in this stage, I think studios are going for the demographic eveyone goes for. J6P male 21-35. These titles don't interest that demographic. Not to say that many people in that age group wouldn't love to see some Hitchcock on HD, I know I would. But I can't see them selling in the type of numbers it would take to make up for the restoration process/marketing.

I'm looking for the "classic" titles that you guys are mentioning to come in a couple more years. Right now I think the focus is on day-and-date releases, with a smattering of catalog titles that appeal to said demographic.

Things that would sell and haven't been released for no good reason:

Alien Movies
Fight Club
Scarface
Blow
Godfather
Se7en
Tombstone

Things that can't be released right now because of picky/crabby directors/studios/owners:

Star Wars
Indy
LotR

I like your lists and would jump all over them.. I do have Casablanca and Mutiny on the Bounty because I love the classics as much as new releases though I have the superbit version of Blow and probably wouldn't DD that one.

If you like classic films - try these:

Forbidden Planet
Grand Prix
Battle of the Bulge
