Does it need to be in High Def?

No. I can still enjoy Lord of the Rings for example on DVD.

Would I like to watch it in High Def?

Yes,... Every time. Some movies are all about the story and have no explosions or special effects and can be a full experience without being HD but those same movies still benifit from HD perhaps even more because of the way they draw you deeper into the story. NCFOM is an example. You get the gist from DVD but the Blu Ray will give you the experience nearly like you would have in a great theater.

Nope, not everything. In fact, only a small % will be HD.

IMO, those that say "no more SD in my house" are not beig realistic or truthful. There is no way in hell every movie will be on HD. So, to you guys that proclaim "give me HD or nothing", good luck to you. For me, I love movies, HD is just an upgrade when available.

Stew,

I sort of see you point. Some of my favorite movies may not appear again on any format and I'm lucky for the DVD version. (Since they also don't play at the local theater either.)

However,.. Netflix really does seem to have stocked up on the Blu Rays and although I have the 3 at a time plan I can watch something new every night which means that there is plenty of available choices in HD. Given a choice,.. I would spend time watching HD and seems like it's no longer a far fetched option.

Enjoy your HD movies!
+1 why is it less important that a comedy is in HD because it's still only as funny? Theres only as many explosions and chards of glass in an action movie, it's clearer and more lifelike, that instantly makes something more attractive, if something is more attractive it's still a more enjoyable experience.

I just like a clean sharp picture, I feel like I'm watching a pirate now when I pop an SD DVD in.

I generally completely avoid SD DVD now, unless it is something that will likely never see a HD release, or I'm at my gfs or whatever wanting to watch a film and she has no HD equipment. Even then I pick titles that aren't availible in HD though.

I agree completely. The genre does not dictate how important picture quality is. I like to see HD in ALL my movies, regardless.

There are many films out there that have met the tortures of improper storage and/or handling. These films wouldn't look so good on HD. Some examples of these are The Last Starfighter, Excalibur, and Spartacus. The original negatives were just not kept in good condition and their original filming was conducted through a tight budget. So to answer the question:

Should every movie/video be released on HD?
That depends on the quality of the original negative or available copy.

Will every movie/vide be released on HD?
It will probably not touch the 90,000 DVD titles anytime in the near future.

Let's put it this way, I will not repurchase anything I already have in SD just because it's avaliable in HD. A waste of money IMO.

If it's something new that I want, of course I will purchase in HD, only because I have the capability to do so, plus it looks better.

If the DVD doesn't have any serious flaws like bad compression artefacts or totally wacked out colors, a good movie will suck you right in and let you forget you're watching SD.

I just tend to salivate more when watching anything good HighDef.

If the price of BD comes down to that of SD for ALL new releases, I'll buy the BD because there is no reason not to. Many dramas, for example, have no benefit of HD for AQ or SQ. Dark rooms, low light, center channel audio for 99% of the movie won't make a difference (to me) if the sound is lossless and true 1080p. I watch a lot of dramas.. well, I watch a lot of mvies in general.

An action, sci fi, big outdoor movies, etc, do take advantage of HD... again, to me.

It's a personal chioce for me. There are many movies that I'll double dip on (and have quite a few) because it's the genre I feel HD improves the entire "feel" of. But many releases are just fine on SD for me. I can see that I am in the minority in this but that is ok, all of this is an individual thing.

If that happens now then the studios are losing money on the deal. What is the point of selling a better, more advanced, more expensive to make presentation . . . and getting no extra money?

How can a format grow if you only sell discs during sales?

It seems that most folks are waiting around for BOGOs and B2G1s.. so BD dug their own grave for that just to kill off HD DVD (skew numbers..etc), now we'll see how sales are.. which we don't get to know units sold anyway. My guess is it isn't very high overall.

Personally, I see no point in paying extra to watch a comedy or a romantic movie in high def. How will that really improve my viewing experience - is Blazing Saddles more funny because it went high def? To me, the extra money I would spend to see that in high def is wasted, whereas movies like Kingdom of Heaven, Lord of the Rings, etc. would actually be improved experiences because of the high def treatment the most.

I also don't see the big deal in having extra features that are high def: does it really matter that the documentary is high def? I read one review in which the reviewer stated he was tired of having to watch the features in SD. Does that strike anyone else as being a bit too devoted to high def? Just curious.
I still buy movies in SD, and as you mention, usually comedies or drama. Anything I think will look really good in HD, I buy in HD though - it does depend somewhat on price. So far, I've been lucky and gotten pretty much any title I wanted for an average of less than $15 in Hidef. That is still about twice as much as I pay for dvd's - which I typically pick up used for 7.50 or less.

I only buy/rent in HD. It cost me a little more, but its worth it. I didn't buy the best I could to not use it each and every time, thats how I see it.

That means you don't get to use your "best" very often
