All should wait to the the DVD player by LG, it will play both Blue Ray & HD DVD! No matter who wins you're safe!

IF a dual format player comes out, it won't be this fall. Maybe fall of 2007. There is too much licensing red tape holding the process back.

That article was posted on
January 10, 2006 The above article I posted was on March 15, 2006. I may appear that LG climbed those hurdles. "Los Angeles (CA) - A spokesperson for LG Electronics in North America confirmed to Reuters today that his company had sent a memo to its retailers, urging them to prepare for the release this fall of a high-definition video disc player capable of playing both HD DVD and Blu-ray formats. LG sells components in the US and Canada, including under the Zenith brand." http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/03/15/ul...f_disc_player/ Last edited by HD_Lunatic; 06-02-2006 at 05:30 AM. |

There won't be a dual player in 2006, heck there might not even be a Blue ray player the way Blu ray is faltering. Samsung and LG are both attempting to build one but it won't be this year, I doubt anyway.

I don't think anyone outside of LG knows for sure, but I suspect it will be long wait for a dual-format player.
Samsung announced their intention to build one and backed out with cross-licensing issues specifically stated as the reason. LG's memo "leak" came out in March and, while widely disseminated and discussed at the time, there has been little word since, nor any evidence that either camp would be willing to license their technology for use in a combo player. |

It's coming..... Sony & Toshiba didn't come to an agreement, so who wins... LG wins.
It appears that they scrapped their plans for the blue ray to make this one. "LG allegedly scrapped plans for their BD199 Blu-Ray player in favor of a combo player for both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray by the fall." http://www.hdbeat.com/2006/03/14/ult...d-blu-ray-war/ The fact remains, not hearing anything since 3/15 does not mean it was scrapped. You would have to hear something that it was scrapped, & I have not seen that. It appears this coming out in 06. LG is the winner here, the other players that will play only one format will sell until the word gets out on these.. Last edited by HD_Lunatic; 06-02-2006 at 08:40 AM. |

And Toshiba shipped HD DVD when they said they would. And Sony shipped Blu-Ray when they said they would. Or at least until they announced they wouldn't
![]() I didn't say it was scrapped (that was Samsung, who formally announced cancellation), just a long wait. LG never formally *announced* they were going to make a combo player, it was a leak of an internal dealer memo and an LG spokesman confirmed that such a memo was sent, not that it was true. That could mean almost nothing. Ask Toshiba dealers or Samsung dealers how many memos they got telling them when they'd get HD product. In the world of consumer electronics, I don't consider any news from three months ago to be relevant. If it was a technical issue, I could believe LG solved a problem that Samsung couldn't, but Samsung specifically stated that as a result of corporate egos involved, they could not come to a licensing agreement that would allow them to produce a combo player. Don't worry about me, I'm not buying one until the second generation products are out
. My guess is it will be HD DVD with 1080p output, but there's no way of knowing at this point.I'll predict, though, that if LG is permitted to make a dual-format player (it's not *their* decision as they don't control the rights to either HD DVD technology licensing or to Blu-Ray technology licensing) it will be *outrageously* expensive to cover the punitive licensing fees that both camps will charge them. After all, how does it benefit either Sony (who wants to win, not compromise) or Toshiba (who wants to win, not compromise) for there to be a competitve product that is more desirable than either of their products? |
