How much memory (disk space) is needed to record the average HD movie? I understand the non-HD movies for the standard DVD was anywhere from 700MB to 1 GB.

And when an HD movie is copied to an HD-DVD is the size of the movie recorded to a BLue Ray DVD (blue ray) going to take up more, less, or the same amount of space than an HD-DVD (red ray)?

Both HD DVD and Blu-Ray use blue-laser diodes for HD (and also have a red laser for conventional DVD). The shorter wavelength of light makes it easier to increase disc capacity (there is also a Chinese red-laser HD format, but it's not likely to get any studio support in this country).

I don't think there is a definitive answer to your question though. The discs have the storage capacity that they have and the movies are made to fit using digital compression. The more storage capacity you have, theoretically the less compression and the better the picture, but in most cases, the amount of compression is going to be fixed regardless of the disc capacity and extra capacity will go toward special features and interactive content.
