The thing about projections and expectations is that it is understood that things can (and do) change.
It does not change the fact that it is blatantly false to deny that Blu-ray failed to meet studio expectations. To varying degrees, sure. But it is absolutely impossible for someone to honestly assert that expectations have failed to be met by actual Blu-ray performance in the marketplace. |

Outside of PR spin land, none of the above is a major surprise from a late 2008 viewpoint. For some perspective, the iPhone was released in June 2007. What was a surprise is the very lackluster BD acceptance. I am certain that no one would have expected BD net growth in 2011 to only be $350 million. Indeed, anyone asserting that in late 2008 would probably be called "pessimistic" (at best). |

One of the issues that you ignore is that retailers control packaged media price points at the point of sale, not the studios. What has happened since 2006 is that retail price points for catalog DVD and projected price points for new releases on DVD and Blu-ray and for catalog new to Blu-ray releases have declined faster than expected as retailers have adapted to new competition for packaged media including cheap Netflix and Redbox rentals and the explosion in mobile device activity.
Unit sales for DVD have not fallen at the rate that revenues have declined as the overall retail price points have fallen. Perhaps you remember industry discussions on how lower DVD prices and things like Walmart DVD bargain dump bins were devaluing the value of DVD movies? Blu-ray units sold growth has been higher than the revenue growth since inception and since the time of Blu-ray's launch DVD price points for older releases have declined substantially generating less revenue for DVD catalog sales for the same amount of units sold at retail. DVD revenues have declined faster than DVD units sold. Blu-ray units sold have increased faster than Blu-ray YoY revenue gains. The decline in retail price points for older DVD releases that have been on the market for years, with full hardware market saturation, was anticipated but probably not to the levels that were created as retailers reacted to cheaper rental and free entertainment alternatives such as Netflix Redbox and free stuff on the Internet. There always has been studio concerns that rentals affected sell through but cheap and easy rental alternatives such as subscription Netflix disc and streaming and the explosion of $1 a night Redbox kiosks only accelerated those concerns. |

You seem to want to ignore that the TBO disparity and the strength of releases in the 2011 to 2010 comparisons was major factor in that lower growth rate for DVD and higher attrition for DVD. If 2012 vs 2011 has a better TBO comparison than in the past annual comparison then that should result in a better result in the YoY metrics as well. We already saw that in the 3Q 2011 and first half of 4Q 2011 and now in 1Q 2012 when the releases are better or at least more comparable Blu-ray and even DVD gets better results. No one in 2008 or earlier could have predicted the strength of 2010 and 2011 home video releases or the box office in those years with any certainty. You just cannot ignore what the power of the titles released on home video have on the numbers. |

Ok guys, let's put this to bed or take it to PM. It's not a big deal, and is just petty semantics actually. I enjoy hearing you guys argue, but please do it about something that's worthwhile. Ok?

Off topic bickering posts removed. Please stick to the topic (or at least the topic the thread has evolved to) and if you're going to attack, attack the post and not the poster. Thank you.

DOH! Sorry Bruce. I was typing my last post while watching The Walking Dead. Hope that it wasn't too much. Just trying to set some things straight. Wasn't trying to come off attacking. Just being honest.

Thanks Goofnut. I know we had a run in or two there. But that was mostly a misunderstanding on my part. It is nice finding this site for sure.

Well that's why I apologized. I took a long time to type that out while watching TV and didn't see Bruce's post. I don't think it was bad. And I was just making a point backed up with some solid explinations and reasoning. But the mods can decide and I'm ok either way because I know they are fair and balanced here. That's all I ever wanted.
