Some actual marketing might be nice... And the UV logo on players would be welcome...Getting out of Beta-mode would be nice.

Hopefully we'll see some something with CFF which should be nearly done by then.
Hope so for for their sake...

After all, six million people are signed up and downloading proprietary movie files. In theory at least, those files have to be downloaded again in CFF format to guarantee compatibility. Talk about aggravation.

Two pieces of news today:

1. Give the gift of (or receive) Ultraviolet this Christmas! Sony launches gift version of their normal UV store just in time for holidays so that people can gift others digital UV movies.

http://www.sonypicturesgiftstore.com/

2. Kaliedescape launching own UV store and at home D2D program:

http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/11/k...raviolet-prom/

Unfortunately, both require you to one of their servers, which last time I checked, were out of most consumers' price ranges.

UltraViolet™ to Deliver Room Shaking Surround Sound Powered By DTS

Quote:
Studios Now Able to Deliver Content in Immersive DTS Surround Sound on UltraViolet Platform

CALABASAS, Calif. (December 11, 2012) – DTS, Inc. (Nasdaq: DTSI), a leader in high-definition audio and audio enhancement technologies, today announced that several leading content solution providers, including Digital Rapids, Elemental Technologies, and Rovi, now support DTS Express™ surround sound for creation of content in the UltraViolet™ Common File Format (CFF). DTS Express, part of the DTS-HD® family of audio solutions found on nearly all Blu-ray Disc™ movies, is fully optimized for digitally delivered content, providing a high-quality immersive surround sound experience with the UltraViolet CFF.

"The way the world consumes entertainment is rapidly evolving and UltraViolet is a great example of the kinds of services emerging from this shift," said Brian Towne, chief operating officer and executive vice president at DTS. "While the content sources may be changing, the demands and expectations for quality are not, which is why we are thrilled to be working with content solutions providers to ensure that consumers receive the same high-quality DTS audio experience that they've come to know and demand, directly from UltraViolet-enabled content."

"The industry's development and phase-in of the UltraViolet Common File Format will bring substantial added benefits to UltraViolet users, and to the industry," said Mark Teitell, general manager of the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE), the industry organization behind UltraViolet. "DTS has been among the leaders in investing expertise and resources to help bring CFF to market."

DTS Express is a high performance adaptive bit rate technology that delivers an impressive cinematic surround sound experience from content, whether streamed or downloaded. With the ability to adapt to bit rate changes without audio dropouts, clicks or pops, as noticed with competing audio solutions, DTS Express shines when bandwidth is limited and network conditions fluctuate.

DTS Express provides:
•Constant bit-rates from 64 kbps (2 Channel) and up
•5.1 channels from 160 kbps to 512 kbps
•Supports up to 7.1 channels from 288 kbps to 768 kbps
•Adaptive bit rate capability (without audio anomalies)
•Backwards compatibility with all legacy products via the DTS real-time transcoder

DECE's UltraViolet platform gives consumers greater flexibility in how and where they collect, share and enjoy movies and TV shows. Once a movie or TV show has been added to their UltraViolet collection, users will have options to stream it on most Internet-connected devices, download it for offline viewing, or play it back on a disc. Because UltraViolet offers so many viewing options, users have greater freedom to choose where they want to watch—whether it's on a mobile device, computer, smart television, game console, etc.

DTS has been actively working with content solutions partners in support of the UltraViolet delivery format, CFF. Content creation tools that support CFF with DTS include Digital Rapids Transcode Manager® 2.0 powered by Kayak, Elemental® Server from Elemental Technologies, and Rovi TotalCode™. In addition, a significant effort has also been placed on quality control and playback tools that ensure a top quality consumer experience. DTS has partnered with Solekai for validation tool support, CastLabs on an Android tablet-based media player, and has adapted its DTS-HD MediaPlayer to become a professional real-time player and quality control tool for CFF confidence monitoring.

The major problem that UV is still facing is that Disney is still not on board and it doesn't look like they have any intention to be. I have personally been disappointed with UV and the only company that has really done anything with it is VUDU, which happens to be the best way to watch media other than BD.

CinemaNow and Rovi launch beta at home D2D service!

Same prices as Vudu's D2D. It only specifically mentions DVD's so not sure if Blu-Rays are supported yet if you have a BD drive.

Add Movies to Walmart's 'Disc to Digital' Library From Home

Quote:
LAS VEGAS–Walmart is expanding its "disc to digital" service to allow customers to add their DVD collections to the cloud from the comfort of their homes.

Rather than having to bring physical DVDs into a Walmart store to have them converted to UltraViolet digital copies, customers can now sign on to Vudu.com and convert a standard DVD or Blu-ray for $2 or upgrade a standard DVD to HD for $5.

Once added to the Ultraviolet digital locker, customers can access those movies by signing in to Vudu on any one of the more than 300 devices that support Vudu, while still maintaining ownership of their physical DVDs. (Walmart bought Vudu in Feb. 2010.) Basically, the idea is to encourage continued DVD purchases while providing those DVD owners with more freedom in how they watch.

The program applies to any film from DreamWorks Animation, Lionsgate, MGM Studios, Paramount Home Media Distribution, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.

Walmart first launched its disc-to-digital service in March 2012 at 3,500 Walmart stores. But people had to come into the store to add their DVDs to the cloud.

Last month, Walmart enabled downloading and streaming of more than 100,000 movies and TV shows on Android devices. At the time, streaming was available on iOS but not downloading, but Walmart said today that downloading will be available on Apple gadgets in mid-February.

To entice users to try out its service, Walmart said it will also give new Vudu customers 10 free pre-selected movies when they sign up for an UltraViolet account or link to an existing account.

Meanwhile, Walmart will be launching the Walmart Entertainment Facebook App, which will allows for Vudu promotions, fan votes on which movies should be sold online and in stores, exclusive movie and video game content, personalized recommendations, and more. Walmart said the page will be live in time for the February DVD release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2.

"The concept behind Walmart's Entertainment app is to create an innovative approach to shopping," Tom Arrix, vice president of Global Marketing Solutions at Facebook, said in a statement. "Connecting social activity to Walmart stores across the country will empower fans to change and personalize the store experience."

Flixster seems to have integrated it as well.

Another interesting thing that I didn't notice but others did is that MGM is on the studio list in the article. So MGM is finally going UV? That would be nice cause I have some MGM DVD's that I would like to D2D.

And so has CinemaNow. Plus M-Go, Nook Video, and Redbox Instant are all new VOD services that should support UV when they launch.

Mike, will you post the DEG report (or an article that refers to the data) as soon as something comes up?

Of course.

I would have thought it would be up by now. Usually gets posted when CES starts.

CES 2013: CE Industry and Hollywood Announce 'Bold New Partnership'

Quote:
Execs from Fox, Lionsgate, Sony, Warners and Universal join CEA CEO Gary Shapiro to launch an UltraViolet promotion.

Execs from five Hollywood studios joined Consumer Electronics Association president and CEO Gary Shapiro for his CES opening keynote to launch an UltraViolet promotion that Warner Home Video president Ron Sanders described as a "bold new partnership between the consumer electronics industry and Hollywood."

Joining Sanders for the announcement: Steve Beeks, Lionsgate’s co-COO and president of its motion picture group; David Bishop, president, worldwide, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment; Mike Dunn, president of Fox Home Entertainment; and Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

Making a big push for UltraViolet, they announced a new cross-industry promotion initiated by their studios and several major consumer electronics manufacturers. Per the partnership, consumers who later this year purchase select, connected TVs and Blu-Ray players from participating manufacturers will receive up to 10 free UltraViolet movies as an "UltraViolet starter campaign." Participating partners include LG, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba and Vizio.

"It provides extra value to hardware consumers while providing another gateway for movie fans to enjoy their favorite films digitally, anytime, anywhere on the device of their choosing," Sanders said.

UltraViolet — which was launched by industry consortium Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE) in October 2011 — is a developing cloud-based service aimed at letting consumers download and stream their entertainment content anytime, anywhere across supported devices.

Sanders projected that in the coming weeks, UltraViolet would reach 10 million account holders. An estimated 8,500 UltraViolet titles are currently available from BBC, DreamWorks Animation, Fox, Lionsgate, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Starz Anchor Bay, Universal and Warner Bros.
