To go negative for this year would be extremely unlikely. Blu-ray would literally have to fall flat on its face.

I have noticed on the first few titles I checked, that sometimes the combo disc SKU is discontinued and/or a non-combo SKU appears.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows: The combo was available upon release but it appears that Amazon isn't listing it anymore (just the steelbook which is a Best Buy exclusive).

The Lorax: A non-combo wasn't available upon release but now it is.

So, according to the above, in 2012, Buena Vista, Dreamworks, Universal and Warner put all of their eggs in the combo disc basket. Fox and Paramount do as well the vast majority of the time. Sony does so a little less than half the time and Lionsgate never does.

A better question is what exactly is the combo set's purpose.

On the release week, the combo set could be used as a something to attract the impulse buyer and/or somebody who is "on the fence" about buying into bluray. There could be a perception that one gets more "value" in a combo pack for a few more dollars, than the dvd-only sku.

When such titles end up in the catalog shelves at Bestbuy, Walmart, etc ... or in the $5 bargain bins, the question is whether the combo pack still makes a huge difference. (It is certainly ineffective if the combo packs are returned to the distributor).
