Default Blu-Ray movie prices suck in Canada!

Just as the topics title, it really stinks. I am trying hard to justify buying new Blu-Ray movies and possibly replacing my DVD collection and find it as being a BIG FAT Rip-Off.

Not sure about the USA but here in Canada we are all getting screwed with high priced DVD's. I admit the older player prices have come down a lot but still the prices are higher than what they should be compared to the USA.

Best Buy Canada, Future Shop, The Source, Wal-Mart Canada, Sears Canada, The Bay etc, are ripping people off with high priced Blu-Ray movies.

The BD movies which costs between $8 to $15 is not worth replacing my existing DVD collections. Even the Bourne Trilogy on Blu-Ray costs over $86.99 + 13% dales tax and at Amazon.com it costs $69.
Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection and TNG movie collection each costs $100+ in Canada.

If they expect people to buy Blu-Ray movies or curb people from renting, burning then selling, they have to start dropping prices to at least a little above the costs of the DVD films.
-------
I was at Rogers video the other day with the wife and couldn’t believe my freaking eyes and ears LOL, there was a few guys giving out business cards. They basically rent burn, convert/decodes what ever Blu-Ray movies, them into DivX HD 1080p video and sell them for $5 a piece or $75 for 20 Blu-Ray DivX HD films. The guy had the Star Trek Movie collections for both Original and TNG for dirt cheap at Blu-Ray PQ & AQ.

No I am not interested in this garbage, its not right but you know what there’s a dump load of people doing this all over the place. So many people buy these discs and so many sellers get busted just to find them back on the street doing the same dam thing.

Now you understand why studios need to drop prices and compete with Piracy.

Anyway I am blowing off some steam because I didn’t end up getting the Star Trek movie collections due to rip off prices. I have them on DVD, they haven’t convinced me yet to take the plunge and buy them on Blu-Ray

I just ordered another $50 worth of Blu-ray movies from iNetVideo in Canada, I thought the prices up there were great. I must have ordered several hundred dollars worth and a number of them are the Canada release versions. If store prices are too high, look to order from Amazon.ca or iNet or other. I just ordered from iNet because it offered free shipping. A bunch of titles from $6.99.

I second inetvideo. Often times they're prices are the same or lower than amazon.com.

Yes they do. For new movies anyways. It kills me when I see all these '____ for only $10' threads and then I got to check our prices and its still $27+ for new releases. I can order off amazon yeah but I have to get like 3-4 movies at a time to get any worthwhile savings.

I find here that we get some of the catalogue titles at very reasonable pricing but those are the bargian bin movies that can't be sold. I also find many catalogue titles that I'm interested in owning at the $30 range.

Maybe the governments said screw NAFTA and worked in some customs tax because in general the new releases in Canada are $4-$5 more expensive than in the U.S.

You gotta pay for that health care in Canada. It makes perfect sense that products would be higher.

Its the legacy of the low canadian dollar.
Companies can charge whatever they want, its a free market. For example when the canadian dollar went up to almost $1 USD some car companies gave canadians a break and lowered their prices(not by much though), but companies like BMW chose to not budge. Why? because they can, they know canadians are used to paying prices back when the dollar was worth 63 cents, and they'll continue to do so. As a business it makes no sense to lower prices if people are still buying.

Actually, in 2007 the Canadian dollar went up to $1.10 US. Even then some car companies did not lower their prices in Canada.

Books have the U.S. price and Canadian price printed on the book sleeves and on the actual books somtimes.
I guess the belief is that a strong Canadian dollar is permanently temporary

I just finally bought Pirates Curse of the Black Pearl because the price dropped to $14.00. I had it saved for later for well over 2 years waiting for the price to drop.

Patience is your friend, but I agree that the movie industry seems to be taking their cue from the music industry and look what over charging cost the music industry.

Only because the USA is subsidizing the discounts for Canada & Europe with the USA paying full price, and sadly ObamaCare is not doing anything about that.

Blu-ray prices are great in the US. I don't take any prescription drugs, or any other for that matter, so high drug costs has no direct impact on me. I do recognize it is a problem here anyway. I picked up 6 Blu-ray titles at a garage sale here this weekend, $45 total. Asking price was $60 and he had a bunch of others I would have purchased if I could afford to spend any more money on this stuff. I needed to be able to go to Target Tuesday and pickup Toy Story 1 and 2 and with coupons in hand, I expect a great deal on those.

Well thats the price of not having a centralized 'communist' system to control prices.

Theres a quick fix for that though. Just buy from us. John Mccain and a few others had the same idea but someone keeps ruining it for you guys though.

The drug-importation bill was proposed by Sen. Byron Dorgan, a North Dakota Democrat who allied with some Republicans. Mr. Dorgan and Sen. John McCain (R., Ariz.) said the measure could save consumers some $80 billion over 10 years if they could buy their drugs from other countries directly via the Internet or mail order.

The seniors' lobby AARP deemed the importation measure a top priority for its nearly 40 million members, and Senate staffers said the group triggered thousands of calls to members of Congress.

President Barack Obama campaigned in support of drug importation during the 2008 election.
I believe the FDA is moving ahead to promote safe importation.
"Finally, the budget also includes $5 million for FDA to develop policies to allow Americans to buy safe and effective drugs from other countries.}
