The "Blu-ray 3D" specification fully leverages the technical advantages of the Blu-ray Disc format to deliver unmatched picture quality as well as uniformity and compatibility across the full range of Blu-ray 3D products, both hardware and software. Notably, the specification allows every Blu-ray 3D player and movie to deliver Full HD 1080p resolution to each eye, thereby maintaining the industry leading image quality to which Blu-ray Disc viewers are accustomed. Moreover, the specification is display agnostic, meaning that Blu-ray 3D products will deliver the 3D image to any compatible 3D display, regardless of whether that display uses LCD, Plasma or other technology and regardless of what 3D technology the display uses to deliver the image to the viewer's eyes.

"From a technological perspective, it is simply the best available platform for bringing 3D into the home," said Benn Carr, chairman, BDA 3D Task Force. "The disc capacity and bit rates Blu-ray Disc provides enable us to deliver 3D in Full HD 1080p high definition resolution." The Blu-ray 3D specification is also designed to allow PS3 game consoles to play back Blu-ray 3D content in 3D. Additionally, the specification supports playback of 2D discs in forthcoming 3D players and can enable 2D playback of Blu-ray 3D discs on the large installed base of Blu-ray Disc players currently in homes around the world.

So is ANY LCD or plasma also compatible with this? It is hard to know by how they worded it.

No - only the DLP RPTV's from Mits and Samsung and they will only show half resolution (960x1080) per eye because they use the checkerboard 3D method.

Having 120 Hz or higher means nothing. There will be other electronics inside a 3D FPD that are not there now.

I sure wish when they create a new "standard" they could all do it at the same time. When can we expect BD players that are the 3D models to come out? I wonder if I should return the Sony BD360 I bought for $118.00 on BF sale.

2010 - either 3rd or 4th quarter. I am sure we will be notified during CES 2010 which is in 3 weeks.

When HDTV first came out - there were only 1080i HDTVs and only Panasonic HDTVs would do 720P. We then saw 1024x720P displays being called HDTV's. Then came the 1280x720P HDTVs followed by the 1366x768 HDTVs. And finally we saw 1920x1080P HDTVs. And guess what - only the Pioneer HDTVs could make use of 24P. All the others couldn't because they were all 60 Hz HDTVs. So much for "standards."

I suspect that the cost of a 3D BD player is going to be in the $399 to $499 retail price range.

Do you have a DLP RPTV 3D Ready HDTV made by Mits or Sammy now? If not, then why consider returning the BD player you purchased?

Good point Lee!

I will likely just keep it even though I do not need it. It was a great bargain at that price and I could use it as a BD player in my son's room since he has a 32" HDTV in there.

Anyways - you already have a 3D BD player - your PS3. The FW UP will be coming next year.

At least I'll have a compatible player, but it will be a few years before I buy a new 3D compatible display. Besides, 3D doesn't really matter much to me since it's simply a gimmick.

The definition of a gimmick is a feature that you are not interested in. At one time, sound and color were considered gimmicks.

This is a new feature.

Sound and color were always ultimate goals of the technology. Even in the first days of black and white silent movies, they were always accompanied by sound, usually live music and sound effects, and often the prints were dyed with various colors. That evolved into color film with sound, which is what they were always going for in the first place.

Stereoscopy is definitely a gimmick. It's as old as photography, has been tried over and over again over the decades, and never emerged from the fringes because it causes too many physical problems for too many people, and is only trying to bend the medium into something it isn't anyway. It's cool, it's fun, but it's an expensive parlor trick.

Have you seen a demo of Panasonics 3D system?

Sony have been very coy on that. They havn't once I don't think specified that the PS3 will be a 3D BD player, to my knowledge, they have only ever referred to the PS3's 3D capabilities in regards to playing PS3 software.

I hope it will play BD movies, but I'm wondering if they'll deliberately NOT allow it to play 3D BDs to try and encourage further stand alone player purchases or to appease 3D BD manufacturers or something.

The more immersive the medium becomes, the better. 3D is the next logical step. We experience the world around us in 360 degree sound and sterescopic vision. It makes perfect sense to try and emulate that with entertainment too. Based upon your post I guess you think the medium has reached it's limit but fortunately people like Jim Cameron who work in the industry think otherwise.
