Default Netflix movie streaming coming to PlayStation 3

This is great news especially if NF adds HD streaming to their service in the near future.

NEW YORK – PlayStation 3 owners will soon be able to stream movies and TV shows from Netflix to their TVs using the gaming console, just as Xbox 360 owners have been able to do for a year.

Sony Corp. and the DVD rental company planned to announce the service Monday and launch it next month. It will be available for free to PlayStation 3 owners who have a Netflix subscription that starts at $9.

Actually, HD streaming is already available. It's extremely limited, but there are options.

With all the comments about Microsoft exclusivity in the gaming forum. I wonder if the Zune 1080p HD video streaming voided that exclusivity, or Microsoft decided that was a better avenue to pursue, especially as it would help Zune gain more market presence.

Probably just progression, expansion. I genuinely believe that MS and Netflix were working as a team helping each other. Netflix streaming used to only be available on Windows PCs in combination with IE using a poor program, now it's available for Firefox (I think) with a newer MS prog Silverlight and now runs on Macs, BD players, and Roku boxes.

You can bet there will be a firmware patch(es) for the PS3 to make Netflix run better. Damn Sony software programmers.

Initially, watching movies instantly streamed from Netflix via the PS3 system will be enabled by a free, instant streaming Blu-ray disc that is being made available to all Netflix members. The free instant streaming disc leverages Blu-ray's BD-Live(TM) technology to access the Internet and activate the Netflix user interface on the PS3 system, which must be online via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Netflix members simply slide the disc into their PS3 systems to reveal movies and TV episodes that can be watched instantly.

Update: Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities noted that the Blu-ray disc required for Netflix playback on the PS3 may circumvent exclusivity clauses instituted by Microsoft. "We believe that the exclusive arrangement limits Netflix's ability to appear on the 'dashboard' for the PS3 or the Wii." Additionally, Pachter believes Netflix streaming will expand to Nintendo's console next year. "We anticipate that a similar arrangement will be announced for the Wii in the next 12 months."

Great news for me and a lot of PS3 owners. I cannot wait to try this out. I may just start buying PS3s to use as BD players for all my displays as needed going forward because of this.

The PS3 is sure a safe bet. It has continually been updated with improvements. It is also the all-time best value media player in the history of the world.

Oh, so that's the catch, and the reason you need the disc.
Well, it's free I guess. We'll have to see how much better this solution is v PlayOn.

Apparently this is how they were able to get around the exclusive agreement with MS on software based Netflix streaming. They are saying a software update will be available to stream without having the disc in the PS3 next year. The speculation is that this allows them to get around that MS exclusive agreement until then by using the BD-Live feature on the PS3 to do it.

I can live with this for free now and wonder if this will be coming out for other BD-Live BD players as well at some point.
