Default Is there a device that allows cross streaming recorded DVR to another DVR?

I am considering getting two DVRs from my cable company but do not want to have to deal with the proglram being recorded on the bedroom DVR when I want to watch it in the living room DVR.

Is there a way to watch whatever is recorded on one DVR through the other DVR?

Thanks in advance for any help. I have never owned a DVR before (believe it or not) and wonder if this is possible.

You would be looking for a Network DVR which as far as I know of just got through the court systems with Cablevision on Long Island (Cablevision won) but they don't exist yet for consumers.

At this time (AFAIK) they are stand alone devices. The ones you get from your cable company are either Motorola or Cisco (Scientific Atlanta).

I would like to make a suggestion PFC5 . . .

Start off with a single HD DVR. They are really incredible machines. Put it in the room where the most TV is watched.

I sit on my couch and go thtough my HD channels for a 2 week period every week (the guide shows 2 weeks in advance) then start recording shows like crazy. Then for a week - they just show up - each morning I watch TV and see what I recorded.

You can also have a series recording that records your favorite TV every week automatically.

I don't save anything - after I watch it - it gets deleted

What about that SlingBox device?

My cable company uses S/A STBs. I may start out with one or can't I get a single S/A box to try it out, but can I get a USB External hard drive and record everything on that and just move that between the rooms? Will that still alow me to use the internal hard drive in each as well?

Thanks!

That will probably work but it sure does sound cumbersome.

My new suggestion - move this thread to the Cable Forum where you will get more input.

A rather pricey approach would be to buy two TiVo HDs (all told, you're looking at about probably over $1300, plus an average $1.50 per month fee from your cable company for the extra CableCARD you'll need). This will allow you to do what you suggest, recording programs on one DVR and watching them on the other.

Note also that if you don't care about HD, you can pick up a couple of TiVo S2s for a song (I can't find a family member or fellow church member to give my old Humax TiVo S2 away to) and then pay about $20 per month for service for them (no sense in paying $800 for service on a couple of old S2s!), and accomplish what you're aiming for.

Again, neither are good options, but they're options.

You can get HD TiVos for $300 each. I don't think the TiVo DVRs allow HD to be played from one DVR to another.

Then you'll also have to pay $10 a month, so effectively about $650-$700 or more, over time. Or $650 each, with no monthly fee.

I'm not sure where you are pulling these numbers from.

I was just at the TiVo website.
The cheapest Monthly fee is $12.95/month not $10 a month.
You said monthly fee, not annual fee, or 3 year fee.
Don't jump in say - If you pay 3 years in advance it's only $8.3055555/month.

The Product lifetime fee is $399. It would be $700 each with no monthly fee.

From memory mostly.

Ouch... I haven't encountered that increase -- I'm still paying $6.95.

No, I didn't. I said, "you're looking at about probably over $1300", giving the reader a good idea of their total cost. You stepped in at that point confusing the reader with the retail price of the box but neglected to say anything about the mandatory service fee.

No, it would be $700 for the first one, and $600 for the second one -- i.e., $650 each. If you're not a TiVo owner, you might not know that. You activate the first one for $399, and then you can activate the second one for $299.

Folks should also know that TiVo often sells refurbs on their website for about $240 plus service fees.

Too much money for that Sling HD solution so it is starting to look like a external hard drive to watch at either spot. I would be very difficult to run any wiring to the top floor where one of them would be, s wireless would be the answer but likely at a higher cost and performance would take a hit too. I guess i will have to wait and see if someone has a lower cost solution, but the TIVO although nice sounding is just too much money IMO.

Thanks everyone for suggestions and please keep them coming.

If you have cat5 wiring between the two locations you could use component video from one DVR to the other HDTV. There are several different balun devices to do this, although for HD it may take 2 cat5 cables for both video and analog sound. I used the Key Digital devices for component video + digital audio and they work very well. See: A/V Distribution Wiring

Once the U-verse whole house DVR came into being the need was eliminated, but I still use them for my HTPCs.
