Default 800x600 and 720p?

ok. im pretty well versed in hd tech and resolutions but im still not quite sure of some things... so bare with me. I know (720p progressive) is 720 lines horizontal. all the time, hence the progressive part. I know 800x600 is an old computer resolution standard (s-vga?) does this mean 800x600 is 600 lines horizontal? and how does interlacing and progressive scan work in the computer relm? refresh rates? Is 800x600 better than 480p? like say on a sub hd projector? which is why I want to know. if this is a tired question, I apologize.

You go to the User CP and enter what you want it to say.

800x600 is better than 640x480. Neither is HD. Interlaced video is normally not associated with computer monitors, although most projectors will accept 480i as an input.

The second number in a resolution spec is always the vertical. The first number is the hortizontial spec:

720 = 1280x720P

1080 = 1920x1080 (i or P)

So 800x600P would be 800H and 600V (P)

DVD is 720x480i

Interlacing uses fields instead of frames. 2 fields = 1 frame. They haven't used interlacing for PC's for a looooong time. I think that CGA - the origianl resolution for PC's was interlaced. It was replaced by VGA (640x480P)

What are you trying to say here, Lee? Are you saying that the OP's interpretation of 720p is incorrect? His interpretation was actually correct. The 720 in 720p refers to the number of horizontal lines of pixels that make up the image. They are counted vertically but the lines themselves are horizontal (unless the TV is on its side). The first number (1280) is the number of pixels per line and they are counted horizontally because the line containing the pixels is horizontal.

The same applies to 800x600, 1920x1080 etc. The second number is the number of horizontal lines and the first number is the number of pixels per line.

While your resolution statements are technically correct, you are using a different interpretation standard and by doing so could possibly confuse the OP and others who think in terms of traditional TV and computer monitor scan lines.

BTW, CGA was progressive scan.

thanks rbinck. I just wasn't sure on the computer aspect of things. so interlacing is only associated with television/tuner/broadcast. and progressive scan is a given with computer issues. so 800x600(progressive scan) is a pretty good resolution? it is sub hd, but still 120 lines away from 720p? I'm looking at a multimedia projector, which seems to blur the lines between these two- computer/television.
and I thought DVD was 480(P)? years ago the big selling point on even the cheapest DVD players where "progressive scan?" ooooh.

DVD players may be either 480i or 480p. Most depending on the setting in the DVD player. 800x600 is a step up from 640x480. They are both 4:3 aspect ratios.
