Philips tv not allowing HDMI wire to work...

Hey all, new to this and not that tech. advanced, but here's my problem. I have a 3 yr old Philips 50" flat HD tv with pixel plus (it's a plasma). I just bought a new Sony blu ray player. I tried to hook up the Sony player to my TV using the HDMI cable - the Sony screen comes on, but then the TV turns to snow. Then, blinks from snow to black every 5-10 seconds. I know the wire works. Also, my TV doesn't allow for 1080, so I lowered the resolution on the DVD player to 720 (think thats what it was) and same deal. I can use the player on the Philips TV using RCA cables, but my tv won't allow for the HDMI cable to work.

Help????

Welcome to the forum!

First try turning the HDMI around and connecting it the opposite ends to each device. This has on occasion worked with some equipment. Also remember that the display should be turned on first and set to the HDMI input BEFORE turning on the device connected by HDMI. This is so the player can negotiate the HDCP handshake over the HDMI connection.

You should also get the latest updates for the BD player (which model do you have?) and install them as this may be corrected with one of the firmware updates. Also call Phillips and see if they have an update for the TV to resolve this HDCP handshake issue.

For BD movies you can still a HD picture using the component (not composite) cables which is the RED/GREEN/BLUE 3 cable connection, while the composite (RED/WHITE/YELLOW) will only give SD resolutions. Which are you using now?

In the future it is best to include model numbers for all effected equipemtn so we can help better/faster with less questions & less guesses of what the problem is.

Oops - the Sony unit is Blu-ray Disc/DVD player BPD-S360 and the Philips TV the 50" Plasma Pixel plus model number 50PF7220A/37. After talking with Philips "support", he told me my HDMI ports might not be "active"(?) - can't remember the word he used, but said a TV repair man would have to look at the set to see if the HDMI ports are working. It's the only device I have that needs HDMI cables so don't know for sure if the ports work properly. As I said, I do know that the wire and player worked on my Visio perfectly...

Also, when I used the red, white and yellow cables on the Philips tv and went to Video output setup, it wouldn't even allow me to choose "HDMI" as one of the 3 ways to connect (the other two were video and componet - both of which I was able to select.). However, when I went on my Vizio, it DID allow me to choose the HDMI as a viable source to use.

At this point, I'm thinking it's got to be the HDMI ports on my Philips. Just don't know if I wanna spend $150 for service call to tell me they're no good.

Also, I was told I have the most updated software on my Philips TV (BX23U-1.5.0.0_03531).

Other than using the component wires (red, white, yellow, blue, and green), any other suggestions?

If you have a HD cable or sat box try using the HDMI connection to the TV and see if that works. If that does not work either, then it is likely the HDMI ports that possibly never worked. I would try to get them to cover it as you can say they likely never worked since you never used them before.

Hey Super Moderator,

Just to put a bow on this - my neighbor brought over PS3 and it didn't work with the HDMI cable, which leads me to believe my HDMI ports are no good. Seeing as this TV is 3 years old and out of warranty, think I'm SOL. May call tv person to see what that charge would be, but not sure I wanna dump hundreds into a 3 yr old plasma. Really appreciate your help and input in this matter...

You might be sol on the HDMI,,,,,,,just use the component. No difference in pic quality.

Hi guys. Saw this so thought I'd contribute. Have exactly the same problem linking to my IN80 projector. It is a handshake issue and the problem is it is questionable who to blame – I don't think it's the projector/TVs fault that Sony has created something with limited compatibility and its not necessarily Sony's fault that maybe our machines haven't been equipped to deal with anything.

Unfortunately when things go digital stuff gets upgraded, such as firmware, which rather than resolving a problem, might actually cause a problem if you're not on a brand new TV. My projector is only a year old.

Regards component, and this is really annoying me now, reading the Sony manual it suggests that component resolution is 1080i (which you'd expect as it is what component is capable of) unless on "protected material" i.e any copyrighted disk (so basically any legitimate disk).

On these it only outputs lower resolution, presumably to stop people dodging the HDMI security checks by using component.

That for me sucks, because as a legitimate user it stops me getting a decent picture from the unit at all.

My only hope is that they will take it back as it is obviously only a day old!

My first experiences of Blu Ray and HDMI have been the worse consumer experience I've had.

Started with a Panasonic BD60, which had fantastic quality pictures, but it freezes occasionally for a couple of seconds during films.

Yep, the quality is great, but why can't simple things like compatibility and general usage be ironed out before they start complicating things with internet connections and security coding.

Seems to me like they are putting the consumer second to opening new marketing routes and getting rid of copyright fraud.

That's fine, but get the basic consumer experience right first – for everyone who has an HD unit and an HDMI link no matter what manufacturer or age. Then add the bells and whistles.

Saint JD - Check your BD settings as a 1080i picture should be capable from BD with component inputs. What is not possible is upscaling from 480 (standard def) to 720 or 1080 over Component. Upscaling can only be done legally via HDMI. But for true HD content 720p or 1080i/p you should certainly be able to display at proper resolution. Good Luck.
