Default How much do you figure this is worth?

Hi all,

Just purchased a condo and the previous owner wants to sell me his electronics separately. Being a newbie in the home theater world, I thought I'd ask some advice on how much I should offer for this system.

Everything was bought/set up in 2006. All the cables are in wall, throughout the 800 sq ft. loft, even running to speakers in the ensuite bathroom and bedroom on the second floor.

TV: Panasonic TH-42pd50 (42 inch EDTV Plasma)
Receiver: Yamaha RXV-557ti
Surround Sound Speakers: Mirage Nano Sat package. Home theather package includes powered subwoofer , 5 speakers & all brackets.
1 pair of rear speaker stands
Mirage Bookshelf speakers for the loft
Dual voice coil stereo speaker for Ensuite bathroom
Local volume controls for loft & Ensuite
Uf-pro Cantiliver Arm for Plasma Television
Digital interconnect cables for the DVD, Cable box & local source from the office, surge protection for all supplied componets.

He's asking for $10 000 (negotiable). Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

TV - no real value, EDTV is little more than a flat screen standard definition set (value, tax deduction from Salvation Army store)
Yamaha V557 - decent receiver, component cables for video switching - no HDMI - decent unit, but limited today (new unit with similar specs < $300)
Mirage Nano's are OK for small speakers, from limited description may be too small for the space available. (top end Nanosat 5.1 set - $800 from www.vanns.com)

For $10,000.....RUN, RUN away....do not walk, do not pass GO....try not to laugh in the fellows face (bad form)

If you are even considering spending that kind of money, you can do SO MUCH better buying new today. This is not a valid offer, it is a joke !

Yeah, his price is meaningless really, I couldn't afford $10K even if the stuff was top of the line! Some people have suggested to me the $3000-4000 range, does that sound like a reasonable offer for this stuff?

$3K to $4K . . . . . NO !

Here is an example of what buying NEW will cost:

42" HDTV - 1080p / 120 Hz = $1,500
Yamaha RX-V665 Receiver = $ 500
Mirage Nano 5.1 = $ 800
Mirage bookshelf speakers = $ 500 (and this is a high value)
extra speakers on stands = $ 600 (again a high value, probably too high)
dual tweeter stereo speaker = $ 75
volume control units (2) = $ 150
cables from Monoprice = $ 100
power conditioner APC H15 = $ 200

Grand total NEW equipment = $ 4,425 and that is high - carefull shopping can lower this total even more

The equipment you are offered is at least 3 years old and all substandard to today's requirements.

If you are a gluton for punishment, offer him $1,000 and he has to take the TV out with him, buy your own new HDTV for $1,500 and you have $2,500 invested in a new HDTV and a so-so home theater audio system.

Completely agree with the above replies. In fact, I would propose that he throw his gear in for free so he doesn't have to go through the hassle of dismantling and moving everything.

Since he tried to pull a fast one over on you, I wouldn't give him a nickel for any of it. Tell him to take it all with him and I'd put a clause in the contract to make sure he leaves the speaker wiring in the walls.

I agree with everyone else NO WAY 10,000 ergh cough I'm choking on this' in today's real estate dealings a seller would and or should use that as a selling feature as in look what you get if we can close the deal by such and such date, but to ask for that kind of money is off the wall.

and now that we are talking "selling contract", aren't installed items usually considered fixed property and not removable or priced separately. The TV, a/v receiver, and wall mounted speakers are removable property.....the speaker wiring in the walls, volume controls installed in the walls, and the in-ceiling speaker are fixed and installed property and can be assumed to go with the house, just like windows, doors, and all installed electrical wiring is assumed in the selling price. Most standard contracts have language dealing with this issue.

But I do agree with "munkey"....the guy did attempt to screw you with an outrageous price for obsolete equipment......bad form, very bad form.

Yea, the guy really tried to pull off a screw job.

Stay calm and offer him a cool $1,000.00.
Don't negotiate after that.

Odds are he'll take it.

I think you're right about fixed property. But my wife used to be a realtor and you'd be suprised what people try to take with them. In this case since the seller brought it up, I'd cover my bases and make sure the contract specifically states that the speaker wiring is left just so when he's pissed off that you didn't fund his brand new home theater system in his new house, he doesn't rip the wiring out just for spite.

If he wishes to sell the condo, tell him to take 10 grand off the selling price if he wishes to leave the sub-standard aud-vid equipment behind.

Not a chance in hell... as mentioned above, you can do much, much better for around 1/3 of the cost he is asking.

The guy is seriously on crack. I wouldn't even counter-offer him, just say, "No thanks, I'm looking to do something different." If he offers something under $1k, I might consider it at that time, but no way otherwise.

And like others said, you should be insulted he's tried to screw you over. He knows exactly what he's doing, the brand new prices on that stuff wasn't even in the $10k range... he thinks he's found a mark he can hump.
