Default HDMI cable question

Hey guys,
I bought a monster cable HDMI Ultra 1000 off of ebay last week. It was advertised as 10.2 gbps and 120hz capability. However, when I received it, the cable had nothing on the outside packaging that boasted any of the above capabilities. The manufactured date on the packaging said 2005. However, when I went to Best Buy to compare the Ultra 1000 cables, they did boast 10.2gbps and 120Hz, but they were manufactured in 2007. Thus, my question for all you experts is...would the 2005 Monster HDMI Ultra 1000 cable be able to perform like the 2007 cable of the same name? I didn't want to open these new packages until I get confirmation, that I'm getting the same quality product. Thank you all for your time!!

Yes. And both will almost be able to perform as well as the $6 cable at monoprice.com. If you paid more than $20-30 for that cable, you wasted your money. What you'll find is the the cable is only important if you are talking about a cable length of longer than 30 feet or so. And even then, you can get a lot cheaper cables that will do the same thing. HDMI is a digital signal. Not analog.

Try reading some of the articles on bluejeanscable.com.

QFT, Monster is a ripoff. Just go to either Monoprice.com or blujeanscable.com. Both offer superb cables for great prices..

Thumbs down Indeed

You paid about 10x more than you should have for that overpriced, overhyped Monster cable. You could have gotten exactly the same cable at monoprice.com for 1/10th the price you paid for the "name".

Default Funny, but true . . . and sad.

If this thread weren't so sad, it would be really funny.

Still, gotta admit, that I too was once uninformed.
After getting my first HDTV (almost 2 years ago) I immediately ran out to radio shack to get an HDMI cable -
paid $40-50 or something like that.
Hell, I didn't even have HD service yet - coulda used SVideo or component and things would have been just fine.

Anyway, over time, I guess I pi**ed away $50-100 in unnecessary cables and such.
Not really that expensive for an education, I guess.

Monster sees us dummies comming all the way.

I thankfully only paid 35.99 on ebay. Thankfully, I didn't pay the 129.99 at Best Buy like they were asking. Anyway, thanks guys for your information!! Very helpful! I'll check out those websites.

If you don't want to wait for a cable to be shipped, my local Harbor Freight store has 6ft HDMI cable for under $10. If you have a local Harbor Freight store, you might check them also.

First off, is this cable going to be in wall or not? Then how long do you need it to be? Any cable on there site is going to be suffice.. But, we need to know if in wall, then the cable needs to be CL2 rated. SO look for that, if not in wall, any of the cables will do. I use these ones, for in wall:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

Then for the ones to hook up my equipment to my receiver I ordered these: These aren't in wall rated.
http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2
Ordered a 5 footer too..
Hope that helps..

Thanks "House 72". The cables are actually not going in the wall. I probably need about 5 or 6 feet. Thanks again.

Also, it may help you to know that the 120HZ has nothing to do with the cable. It's the refresh rate of the TV. HD signal is really only broadcast in 60Hz interlaced, 30Hz progressive, or 24Hz progressive. The 60 would be for a 1080i60Hz signal, the 30 would be for a 720p30Hz signal, and the 24 is from a Blu-Ray player operating at 1080p24Hz.

The speed ratings Monster focuses on are all but irrelevant. There is some info about the speeds in the specs, but for all intents and purposes its completely useless to the consumer.
