You can also view it on your computer if it meets the specs for viewing HD content. I have an upconverting DVD recorder, and somtimes view my HD footage on it. For HD, I connect my HD camcorder by component cables to my HDTV. Hope this helps. |

Another option would be to use the old fashioned method of plugging the camera into that DVD recorder/player using A/V cables and recording the video at real time to the DVD. You will lose the HD though. The only way to view the video in HD from an optical media is to burn the video in a BD format (though you don't actually need the BD media) and play it on a BD player. So for instance, I have an HD camera, a PC that has editing software, and a BD player. I transfer the files from the camera to the PC. Put the movie together in the editing software and burn it to a regular DVD in "BD" format. A single layer DVD contains close to 4.5GB space and therefore roughly 30 minutes of HD video when burned in "BD" format. Once it's done, I cannot watch that movie in a regular DVD player. It won't recognize it. But I can put it in a BD player and watch it in full HD. If you use a dual layer DVD you get close to 9GB and so about an hour of HD video on a disc. That's about all I will need to watch (time wise) of my own family videos at a time. So no need to burn to an actual BD.

I saw these burners look like the size of a dvd drive for the pc they hook right to the camcorder and burn the recording...That what you mean with no PC how hard is it on the PC with editing software Do you use a dvd-R media or have to get a blank blu ray or HD media to use. Then I need a blu ray player too right....I want to get a HD camcorder but once I watch it on my plasma I dont want to keep it on the camcorder I want to copy to dvd to watch ....So what all do I need just getting started. I have a plasma, Std dvd player/recorder with built in Hard Drive 160gb and a PC with a dvd burner...thats it leaning towards cannon HF100 or HF10

First you have to distinguish the difference between what a "blu-ray" disc is. A blu-ray disc is really just a format of disc that allows storage or 25Gb to 50Gb. Like a DVD-R. The format of the files on the disc is what really differentiates the quality of the video. Movies stored in HD require more space and so a BD with 25Gb allows more movie. You can store HD video on a DVD-R, but you have less space and so less movie. If you store the video on a DVD-R in HD format, you will have to have a Blu-ray player in order to watch it. If you store the movie in SD format, you can put it in any DVD player and watch it. Video editing is not hard, just time consuming. You can get any number of editors from Sony's Vegas Studio to Pinnacle's Studio 12, and more. They will run you about $100 - $500 depending on what you want. Most of them now have a Blu-ray compatible encoder which will write the movie to whatever storage you chose (DVD or BD) in HD format for a BD player. A standard single layer DVD-R will hold about 30 minutes of HD video. A standard single layer BD-R will hold about 5 times that much of HD video. But in either case, you will have to have a BD player to watch it because a DVD player will not read the file format. The other option you have is to save the video as a SD DVD. If you do that, any DVD will play it, but what's the point of an HD video camera then? Option 3 is a PS3. You can store the raw HD video files right off your camera on the drive of the PS3 and watch them whenever you want. But be aware, an 80GB PS3 will hold a total of about 8-9 hours of HD video. So you can see where that might fill up. I've had my HD camera for less than 6 months and have 21 GB of video already. I recently started putting the files on an 80GB Maxtor Mini portable drive. That way I can store my videos on a portable drive and watch them on the PS3 whenever I want. And I can put together videos of the kids for my parents and burn them to DVD format so they can watch them.
