Default Audio Cable Hook-up Question

Here is a pic of the rear of the Onkyo HT-R557 Receiver I have:

I have a Samsung LNT4661F LCD Tv, here are the connection specs:

Connectors
Rear Input Connectors S-Video x 1 • Composite x 1 • HDMI x 2 • Audio (RCA) x 1
Front Input Connectors S-Video x 1 • Composite x 1 • HDMI x 1 • Audio (RCA) x 1
Front Output Connectors Audio (Mini Jack) x 1
Headphone Jack With Headphone Jack

I also have a Panasonic DVD / VCR Combo DMR-ES46V That I am unable to find the connection specs but it does have HDMI out along with the usual connections.

Lastly I just had DirectV install their HD/DVR model # HR21-700 , connectivity:

Video Outputs HDMI 1
Component 1 (YPbPr)
S-Video 1
Composite 2 (RCA type)
Audio Outputs Digital Optical 1
Stereo 2 (L/R, RCA)
Other Satellite In (2)
Off-Air In
Phone
Front USB (For Future Use)
Back USB (For Future Use)
Ethernet (RJ45) (For Future Use)
S-ATA Port (For Future Use)

I have the TV / DVD Player/VCR combo and the HD/DVR Receiver on one side of the family room and they are separated from the Home theater receiver by a fireplace so I have to run the cables through the floor over the basement ceiling and back up. I am not going to run HDMI cables to the Audio receiver, it is only a pass through unit anyway. In what way would you guys recommend hooking up to the receiver to enjoy the movies and TV, from what to what? Thanks in advance for any help.....Mark.

I forgot to ad........I do not understand why I would need to hook up any of the video connections in the rear of the Onkyo Receiver if I were only depending on it for sound, am I right?

Well, the picture clearly is not a HT-R557 as you say, I see TX-SR605........weird. And when I went to the Onkyo website, I could find no mention of the 557.....so if it really is a 605 then it upconverts all resolutions, which means your dvd player and other stuff will look that much better on your Samsung LNT4661F LCD. But thats if.......you dont want to get the best picture on the lcd tv then no, dont use the reciever for anything but sound......and if thats the case I'll trade ya my Yamaha.................

Oops, you're right, wrong picture from wrong web site, I'll fix it later tonight. I do have the HT-R557 that came the the "Theater-in-a-Box" that I bought. I have verified that the HDMI connections on the rear of the Onkyo receiver are indeed "pass through" only. If I connect the TV itself directly to the DirectV HD/DVR receiver using a HDMI cable (I already have them) and do the same with the DVD player using another HDMI cable, I don't see the need to use the video connections on the rear of the Audio Receiver, am I wrong?

If it's pass through, I see no reason to connect the video to the receiver as you will need another audio cable to the receiver too. Just go directly to the TV with the video.

Correct - HDMI directly to TV and either optical or coaxial digital to the receiver for audio.

The only reason the HDMI connections are on the Onkyo is for switching convenience only. This might come in handy later as you have used up all the HDMI inputs on the TV already.

You will want to run optical cables of sufficient length from the DVD and satbox to the receiver to hear the Dolby/DTS surround bitstreams from DVD and DirecTv.

Also, if you ever want to play a VHS tape, you'll have to run composite cables (yellow/red/white) from the "DVD/VHS Common Out" jacks to the receiver because that signal will not be upconverted to either the unit's HDMI or optical outputs. You need to continue the composite video from the Onkyo's (yellow) composite monitor out to the TV. Alternatively, you could bypass the receiver with the composite video signal and feed it directly to the TV.

OK, here is the correct picture:

Not to be a pita but here are the descriptions of the cables that I bought from Monoprice and have ran:

PREMIUM 2 RCA Plug/2 RCA plug M/M 22 AWG Cable (2 of these)

and

High-Quality Digital Coaxial Audio RCA CL2 Rated Cable (4 of these)

Which inputs should I use / which type of cable for the best sound from the Onkyo receiver? Thanks guys.....Mark.
