I need some advice

I was in Circuit City the other day and watched one of the 1080i/hddvd setups. All I can is wow. I know I really need to upgrade all my equipment but what can I do to get a better picture off my current set up. I have a rca 52" wide screen hdtv ready rear projection set so I take it I have the possibility to go to 720p if I get a hd decoder right? Would I need to go with a hd converter, hd dvd player and cable to improve the picture or is it possible with my tv? What about up converting dvd players? I have read allot on the net but the info is overwhelming. I dont mind picking up a new dvd player and high definition receiver if need be. I really would like to step up to a lcd hdtv but its not financially possible right now. I dont have any hd channels availble right now so all I am really wanting is to improve my dvd viewing.

Does your TV have HDMI input? If so, I'd suggest getting an entry level HDDVD or Bluray player. Either would upconvert your DVDs, plus you would have access to tons of HD content.

It has a plug labeled dvi/hdtv and thats all.

Someone on said all I need is a hddvd player and a dvi to hdmi cable and I should be good to go with a great picture.
My rca is a d52w20.
