I have a Samsung TXN3098WHF Widescreen CRT, using component cables to connect my DVD (JVC ) player to the TV. When watching movies, particularily in low light scenes, the image is very pixilated and movement appears to "lag" as the pictures move. I have set every possible setting on the DVD player and the TV, but the picture is still quite bad. The HD picture seems to be good on cable HD broadcasts, so I'm suspecting this is something to do with the DVD player and/or connections? Any ideas?

I have a Pioneer prog scan DVD player hooked up to a 61" RCA Widescreen HDTV. My DVD player gives you the option of using progressive scan.
Naturally, I try to use the progressive scan option with everything. But on some of my DVD's, I see the "pixilation" and movements appear as if I'm being drugged up on something. And the odd thing is, this pixilation occurs when I watch a live concert DVD (Dave Matthews @ Central Park, and at the Gorge) that was shot with HD cameras! However, movies like Star Wars Episode II and most other newer releases look better with progressive scan. So I can't tell you why it happens, but I can sympathize with you...its happening with me too. |

I had the same problem when I bought my Toshiba - the DVD picture quality was not what I expected, especially with the dark scenes (black on black). Ended up upgrading my DVD player to a Denon 2800MK and now everything looks awesome. Not all progressive scan DVD players are created equal.
If I could live that scenario over again, I might do it differently. For one thing, my tv set still had the "factory" settings. There are DVD's out there that will walk you through a video and audio "tuneup" of your tv and receiver. That doesn't sound like the problem you are having, but it is worth a try. Let me echo what Micmax said - if your tv has a good line doubler, you may be able to use the existing DVD player with an interlaced picture and let tv do the work. My understanding is that when the DVD player is set on progressive scan, it over-rides the line doubling option on the tv. But your best option is probably to upgrade the DVD player. |
