What is HD?

I just bought a new HDTV and want to run it with WMC. Can I get and record the HD channels I just got from comcast. I have an XP system and am getting a Visiontek TV Wonder 650 HDTV tuner and a HD Video card with HDMI in. Will XP be able to do this? I thought I read on a Microsoft page that I will have to have Vista to record HDTV in WMC. I have 3 weeks to return TV if this does not work out. I was wanting to run the digital through WMC but not sure if this is all worth it if I cannot get HD. Any info on this would be most appreciated. Hope this is the correct place for this thread.

Do you mean an ATI TV Wonder 650? I have one in my XP pro system and it works fine for recording OTA programs. I use Beyond TV from SnapStream (http://www.snapstream.com/Products/) to manage recording and playback.
Don't have Windows Media Center or a HiDef video card so I can't tell you if it will work out with your TV. Also, you should check with Comcast about whether their HD channels allow recording. I think there is a flag that can be set in the broadcast which will block recording. I don't have cable myself but I was speaking with someone who mentioned that they paid an extra fee for the ability to record HD programs. You might want to ask in the cable providers forum. You should probably ask you original question in the HTPC forum. |
