I've just bought a sharp hdtv and had cable company put in a cable-card so I could get rid of one box and one remote...great!!!
However, I've noticed a clicking sound occurs when watching high-def programming. It usually occurs when switching from normal-stretched high def signal to scrunched...I know that sounds weird... For example, the clicking sound often occurs while watching a show like LOST in high def that fills screen....but when ads come on and screen reverts to square mode, not stretched...A clicking sound occurs sometimes.... My question is this: is this a normal result of using the carble card because I no longer have a cable box to filter digital surges??? I'm lost....any help would be so appreciated....thanks....a newbie...

I can't imagine the cable box was eliminating the click, but who knows?

My tv does this also when it switches say from 1080 to another, I set my cable box to the fixed function so it stays at 1080 and the clicking stopped, you might want to check that out.

The clicking noise may just be the TV responding to the 1080i signal versus the 480p SD analog or digital pictures. I know if we set our HD STB's to output format 480p/1080i you get a momentary "blip" while the STB converts from 480p to 1080i, and this sounds like the same thing your TV is doing sans STB. Hope this helps, |

I dont know about your stations, but here in Houston the DTV stations broadcast in HDTV all of the time. They don't switch back and forth between HD and SD. When SD material is shown it is merged into a 16:9 frame and broadcast at the HD format of the station. All of them use excellent scalers, so the video is as good or better than DVD, btw.
Some of our stations will have black pillar bars and others have colored pillar bars with their station information. If the cable card is causing the click, it may be it is responding to some CC noise that the cable box would ignore. Hard to say for sure. |

Side bars are the order of the day here until prime time, and special event things on the weekends. ....sigh..... |

Side bars are here as well, but the transmission is still HD. Our CBS station is broadcasting 1080i even when the material is SD. They upconvert the SD picture and merge it into the HD frame.

I also have a "click" periodically when changing channels, mostly on the HD channels. I asked a Comcast service engineer about it and he said that he had the same problem and that it was not in my box or TV but rather a software problem at Comcast central.

![]() In order for the gray bars not to come on during commercials, I actually have to leave it in zoom view which cuts out a lot of the picture. |

Main show is widescreen HDTV, but commercials are narrow SDTV.

I have two Apex Analog/Digital tuner coverter boxes that both give me this very annoying clicking sound, that blanks out the audio while clicking for 3 to 5 seconds.
