Aspect ratio settings on Sharp LCD

In the aspect ratio settings on my Time Warner Cable remote, I originally had it set so that my "TV type" was 16:9, and a 4:3 broadcast would be stretched. Everything worked out fine, but it was bothering me that the HD Network (CBS, NBC, ABC) Channels came in with the sidebars on a non-HD broadcast and couldnt be stretched. So at someones' suggestion on this board, I reset my "TV type" to 4:3, (WHICH IT IS NOT, REALLY) and those HD network channels appeared without the bars and with better reception than on their analog counterparts. And all other channels came in fine. Then I read somewhere that this could damage the TV! Can anyone comment?

I can't think of how it would damage your TV.

Programs That Are Not Broadcast In High Definition Are Broadcast With Two Black Sides. Programs That Are Broadcast In High Definition Use The Full Screen And At The Beginning Of The Program, It Will Say On The Screen If It Is Broadcast In Hd Where Available.
