What it means to the viewer in layman's terms: 1080i uses more lines to display a picture, and therefore has a higher resolution and clearer picture. However, while 720p uses less lines to display a picture, since it does not use the "interlacing" technique of displaying only half the picture per-frame, it is better for displaying fast-action sports such as football or baseball, since you never see the "interlacing" picture at work. And on some 1080i television sets, the display of some fast-moving objects can show "cross-hatching," artifacts, or choppy images because the object is moving too fast for the interlacing technology to catch up to it. Therefore, 1080i is better for still-pictures and slow moving shows, while 720p is better for fast action movies and sports.

It is not clear what you mean by 1020i uses more lines. If you are comparing 1020i with 1020p both use a total of 1020 lines per Frame. Not sure if you are saying that in 1020i there are a total of 2040 lines in a Frame (2 fields). My understanding is that in 1020i every field has 510 lines and hence 1020 lines per Frame.

Can someone please explain sidebars to me as they relate to SD channels on HD inputs to HDTV and HD channels to SD inputs, etc....
I can't determine a consistent pattern. (My wife would like every channel to fill the whole screen on her new HD set, otherwise what was the point of the bigger set?)

Thanks!

To enjoy quality HD programming on a big screen. Not to watch SD programming stretched to fit the screen.

This may help sort things out for you. Bars, Bars and More Bars

Many years ago, in a country not so very far away . . . they started making color television sets. Lots of people ran out to buy these new color television sets. But when they got them home some people were not all that happy. One man's wife complained that she wanted all of the programs to be in color, otherwise what was the point of buying a color television set. But, alas, the broadcasters took their time and the poor wife had to wait until they decided to make all of the progams in color. Finally after many years the wife was happy again. We still don't know what happened to the poor husband.
