"Fullscreen" DVDs have an aspect ratio of 4:3. They only fill the screen on 4:3 TVs. They will have bars on the sides when shown on a widescreen TV.

For me, it's not that there are bars, it's that I want to see all 58" that my HDTV has to give me.

Then restrict your viewing to discs of HD TV programs, or discs with movies with an aspect ratio of 1.85:1. HD TV programs have an AR of 16:9 (=1.78:1) which matches the AR of your TV. Movies with an AR of 1.85:1 will usually fill the screen of your 16:9 TV because of the overscan built into the TV. Even on a TV without overscan the bars exhiibited on a 1.85:1 movie will be barely noticeable.

Of course, using this strategy will deprive of of the opportunity of watching some very good current movies and some real classics, but the choice is yours.

If the aspect ratio is not listed on the box, you can find the info on the Internet Movie Data Base at http://www.imdb.com
