I have attended a few college football games recently and have seen quite a few RV's and other smaller tailgaters with satellite dishes set up and groups of people gathered around enjoying either the game being played in the stadium they are parked next to ( don't have tickets to get in) or other games of interest around the country. What are the basics of these satellite setups? Like, is it as simple as transporting my home system to a game in the back of my van, getting electrical power from my van via a converter, aiming the dish and punching in the local zip code? And, since this would all be my own equipment, is this breaking any agreements or laws? Anyone have some info and any good tips for setting this up? (- aside from having a good supply of cold brew and barbecue that is)

You basically got it and it is not breaking any laws. You don't need to punch in the zip code except to get the dish aiming parameters. You do need an account that does not need the telephone line connected to the receiver. If you have to have a telephone line connected to your receiver, you need to call Directv and tell them you have moved the receiver to a room that does not have a telephone line availble. Once you do that then the pay for view via the remote will not be possible. Many people use a second receiver they set up for their "bedroom" for their tailgating unit.

Thanks, rbinck, I knew I could count on you. If I'd had my setup maybe I could have watched those mighty Baylor Bears humiliate the Aggies on Saturday. Sic 'em!!
