I'm wondering what is the relative lifetime of a DLP vs. LCD vs. LCOS vs. Plasma RPTV. I don't want to shell out $4k and have the picture deteriorate in a few years.
I'm also wondering how a 1080i signal which is what DirecTV has looks on a 720p display? I know 1080 native resolution is coming out soon for DLP's but if it's a barely perceptible difference it may not be worth the extra cost. Thanks! |

DLP
Although I do wonder how long a colorwheel can spin before failure, Texas Instruments states that hinge failure is non-existent. So besides a lamp replacement every 8000hrs give or take these sets last forever. Picture quality seems to remain constant until bulb failure. LCD TV 50,000-70,000 hours before backlight failure. Picture quality fades gradually over product lifespan. LCD RPTV Reported very long-life with gradual color fade. Makers of these sets claim a new lamp means new tv, but how many cycles before the set is unwatchable?? Lamp replacement every 8,000-10,000hrs. Picture quality will most likely last until an upgrade is desired anyway. Plasma 20,000 to 30,000 hrs. Newer Alis based sets 60,000hrs.(40 years @ 4.5hrs per day). Picture brightness gradually fades over product lifespan. Halfway through lifespan expect the display to be 50% dimmer. CRT direct & RP Usually 5 to 10 years... LCoS LCoS and variants D-ILA and SXRD longevity, no idea. |

Hi, I see you've posted this exact message at AVS too. LOL
DLP is the obvious winner (in the life span category). Those things will easily do 90,000hrs. Of course the bulb does need to be replaced every 8000hrs, but still. Not bad. |

I may be the only one confused about the codes used (DLP, LCOS, etc). Would be helpful if there was a listing explaining what these are, perhaps set up as a "sticky" message at the top.
Thanks! |
