What is HD?

I bought a Sony KV-30HS420 last night and I hooked it up to a regular cable box(not a HDTV box) and the picture quality was horrible. Now I already own a 51" Sony HDTV and there is a Time Warner HDTV Reciever hooked to it, but shouldnt my new tv still give me a good picture with reg. cable?
I ran the cable coax to the cable box and then ran the cable box coax to the TV. Have I done something wrong? This is driving me nuts! |

I have found and have written on this subject that the use of a SD box on a HDTV will yield a very poor picture. My Tivo is terrible on my 50", barely watchable on my 40" TV. The HD boxes have an up converter built into them that works a lot better than the up converter in the TVs. This is due to the upconversion being done from the digital data received to the HD output as opposed to the SD box converting to an analog SD signal output then the TV having to upconvert the analog signal.
