There is a cheaper way. Before I put my tv on the wall I made a cardboard cutout of the exact dimensions and fixed it to the wall using painters tape. That way I knew exactly where to put it when it arrived. Just make some of the different sizes you want to try.

Yes, indeed. Many years ago when I was shopping for my first HDTV, I had a friend that worked at a local Rent to Own store. He brought me out a different HDTV each week in order for me to judge size and picture quality. Of course, I had to pay for the rental each week, which wasn't much, but I found out everything I needed at the time. .

A quick & inexpensive solution is to simply tape off dimensions of the set your interested in with painters tape(blue)

and go to the store to see them, It's not home, but it's a lot less work. Tape, cardboard is a good idea! why go through the hassle. then unless you know someone in the rental store they will screw with you.

We started in 2002 with a rear projection 42" Toshiba from Rent-a-center. My old Sony blew up and we wanted to see what the hubbub was about flat screens? Bought one, then after a few years as the TV's got better I went back and rented about 6 different ones looking for best size and picture. Ended up buying a 50" Sansui plasma (Toshiba guts and LG glass) about 5 years ago from Fry's for dirt cheap because nobody wanted one and Fry's wanted to get rid of it. Still have it and works like a champ. All thanks to Rent-a-center! Rent-a-center will give you a different TV every other day if you want. Can't beat 'em! Depending on your budget, $25 to $100 a month to check an expensive purchase out first isn't bad. I wouldn't buy one from them because a $2000 set will end up costing you $5000. But it's fine to check some sets out for a month or two and swap them after a week or two to try something else.
