If I were you, I'd use one of these on the Home Theater circuit from the generator: Toshiba Series 1000 Online UPS System These are NOT inexpensive, but Toshiba makes some very fine electrical (industrial) equipment. These are "generator friendly". (While the Opti ES800 is good like a Toyota Corolla, the Series 1000 is a top of the line Lexus.)

Do you have natural gas where you live-- piped to your home? A far better fuel for a generator than diesel. If your power is out for days and days, the gas just keeps flowing -- cleaner, cheaper too . . .

This summer half our city was without power for five days . . . could not buy gasoline or diesel-- the gas stations had electric pumps.

Default ok, some straight up recommendations

While the posts for this article are very informative and helpful, I find myself completely frustrated over what I should do with this whole power conditioning/UPS thing. Can someone please help me with the following?

I just bought a Samsung LN55A950 LCD HDTV, I have a Popcorn Hour A110 Media Tank and a Samsung P250 BluRay player, and am getting a new Yamaha receiver and speakers to round out my home theater.

Obviously, I'm concerned about protecting my (rather huge) investment AND getting the most out of it. From what I've read, I'm thinking that I need both power conditioning and UPS. Should I purchase both items, or is there some kind of model out there that does both? Can anyone provide me with model names/numbers for a device(s) that will give me both options? I'm willing to spend good dollars to achieve both goals of having the best possible picture and sound (ie. power conditioner, regardless if they actually work) and surge protection/uninterupted power.

Somebody go out on a limb and recommend some products; or set me straight if my thinking is incorrect. Thanks in advance.

Power conditioners are all smoke and mirrors (proven fact, not just my opinion). Get yourself a nice UPS and you will be fine.

Really? Then why all the articles, posts, testimonials and recommendations for power conditioners?

Anyway, can you recommend any particular UPS's that are good? I've read that on-line one's are the best; is this true?

APC and Belkin make very good UPS units.

Sort of like the articles, posts, testimonials and recommendations for Monster cables.

A lot of people with aquariums run a UPS connected to a car battery to keep heaters, lights, pumps, etc running when the power fails. You can basically use any 12V UPS; remove the small battery and run leads to the large battery. You could run a STB, sound system, and a large plasma for quite some time with the proper set up . . .
I know this is an OLD post, but you're saying I could get a deep-cycle battery (gel-cell optima?) and simply connect it to the UPS for longer run time, and do this safely?

I bought a 50' Plasma Thursday night. It was $400 off this week. The Best Buy guy walked me right over to the Monster Brand HDMI cables and Monster Brand Power conditioners. He was recommending the Monster clean power conditioner. Once I saw Monster Brand all my ears heard was blah, blah, blah after that. They think they can convince you to buy Monster stuff by saying stuff like - Protect your investment, and get the finest HDMI cables so you'll think any other brand HDMI cable will make the picture look like shit.

One of the Monster brand surge protectors even features a digital LED voltage meter so you know the incoming voltage at a glance. I'd bet that's just a display programmed to randomly display 120 +/- 10.

I bought a 6 foot GE brand HDMI cable at Mills Fleet Farm for $12.97 and a Philips surge protector for $20. I'm sure I'll be just fine. I don't think the TV will get fried because I don't have a UPS.
