I just found this forum this evening.
My 1995 Mitsu 50" rear projection just "up and quit" - but after 15 years of faithful service, it doesn't owe me anything. So I'm in the mkt for a new TV. My TV room is fairly large (17'x20') and I will be retiring and moving in about 5 years (or so). I don't plan on taking a lot of stuff with us - a major yard sale, and/or the kid gets whatever he wants. So I would like to get something 50" or larger with HD - but it could be still rear projection, or LCD, or Plasma or whatever. I would "prefer" to be in the $1k ballpark, but could be talked into the $2k ballpark. My wife is also willing to wait until Labor Day weekend, if I could save some money... I have to travel 90 miles to get to Costco, Sam's, Best Buy or 120 miles if I want to go to "Paul's - King of big screens" in LeHabra. (I live in the CA desert) - The only local store is Wal-Mart - so I have to go out of town. So any suggestions on equipment, sales, etc? - Not trying to start a war on LCD vs Plasma, yada yada. Thanks, >>>Rod<<< |

Correct - no gaming.
I forgot to mention that weight & depth are no issue. How about DLP? I know that the word a few years ago was to stay away from DLP because of expensive bulbs. Has that gone away? Thanks, >>>Rod<<< |

DLPs also still require the lamps and have many moving parts which when flat panels cost 3x the money was an acceptable trade off and why I bought one back in 2004, but now that flat panels are mostly affordable, it doesn't make much sense to get a DLP from the only mfg still making them with quality issues. Sure you can get a bigger screen size for less money, but reliability is much lower and replacement lamps can cost as much as $300.00 each and need replacing after 4-6000 hours. I agree with Oblioman that you should be looking at plasmas as they have the best picture currently and are cheaper than LCDs.

I agree wholeheartedly. Check with Chris at www.ClevelandPlasma.com . They have absolutely the best customer service available, along with great prices on plasmas. You won't regret it for a moment.
