Default installing a receiver

I had my receiver hooked up for use with my DVD player at one time, but not since I got some component video cables, and I don't remember how exactly to do it.

Do I hook up my DVD player to the TV, and then run sudio cables from my TV to my receiver, or do I hook the audio from the DVD player directly to the receiver, and then have a pass through to the TV?

Also, if I want to use the receiver sometimes with television (like when watching football), can I easily connect so that I can still have volume from the TV, but also through the speakers at my convenience?

What receiver do you have? Depending on that, the best way most likely is to connect the DVD player to the TV via component video and analog audio (since no HDMI). This will allow audio and video to the TV. Then connect a seperate optical or digital coax audio from the DVD player to the receiver. This will allow for DD 5.1/DTS when you want it or just the TV speakers when you want that.

I have a harmon kardon avr5. I guess I could just hook up the dvd audio cables directly to the receiver only, and use that when I watch DVD's. I don't have surround sound yet, just a pair of floor speakers.

Is there a way to get my TV audio to the receiver? My TV is "HD-Ready" so I have an external tuner box that I use component video and audio cables, so what order do I hook them up?

tuner box-tv-receiver
OR
tuner box-receiver-tv

Remember, I don't want to use the receiver all the time when I watch TV.
