Default p&p

Hey all. I like to think I have a decent understanding of A/V connections, but have a question that is bothering me.

First, the hardware. I have a 52" Sony Bravia KDL-52V4100 with Dish network for TV. The Dish is connected obviously from wall coaxial to input of Dish receiver and then RGB and audio out from dish receiver to component input #2 on my TV.

Why can I not use p&p(sub window) without having to use the CABLE/ANTENNA input? Seems that if I have the ability to even bring up the main window and see programming in the p&p mode, I should be able to select any channel to view in the sub-window without having to jump through hoops(extra connections and different inputs) ...? Why does Sony make it like this?

According to the Sony manual, I can only use the cable/antenna input to utilize the sub-window of p&p. Can anyone tell me how I need to wire up my gear so that I can get programming from my dish channels on both p&p windows(if possible)?

Thanks everyone!

For sat service you will need either a 2nd box to feed the second window or get a box with dual tuners to do it AFAIK. With cable you can split the coax before it goes to the cable box and then send the 2nd coax to the TV antenna input and use that as the second source along with the component (or HDMI) output from the cable box as the 1st input source. Sat needs the box to decode everything while the cable systems only need the built n QAM tuner most current HDTVS have now.

Hope this helps!

A DIRECTV sat box with dual tuners doesn't output 2 different channels on 2 different outputs. It can record 2 things at once but, play back one recording while recording another but only one thing comes out of it at a time.

Then even that solution wouldn't work so TWO DTV boxes would be needed to provide a PiP with 2 DTV sources used. I have never owned DTV so I didn't know for sure if it could output 2 video streams at once.

Thanks for clarifying that.

Thanks everyone for clarifying. Do not need p&p really, but was just messing around with the possibility and was surprised it wasn't as simple as initially thought. I will read up on the provided links too. Thanks again.
