I am needing help with my Surround set up. I am currently on 5.1 set up and would like to upgrade to 7.1. All ready have the Home Theater system(Onkyo TX-SR605) and the 2 extra speakers needed to set up 7.1. I just need help with placement.
I have provided a floor plan drawn up in excel real quick with the info of current setup. Need ideas on best placement of the 2 other speakers. I also provided two angle point of views with my living room(Note: my room is a little messy... I know this... just wanted to get this on quickly.) I guess here is what I was thinking about doing. Leave the Left Surround Where it is (Maybe Lower... This is the part I need help with.) The Right Surround same height but 2'-3' to the right on the other wall around the corner just above the right couch. Then Place the Left and Right Rear Surround speakers lower and equidistant to the others but Lower. I guess this is the best solution but I am not sure about the height. Should the L & R Rear Surround be lower or higher than the Left and Right Surround Speakers. I attached a Proposed 7.1 Floor Plan. Thanks In Advance, Jeremey Norris |

Very tough with the missing wall on the left side when sitting in the back couch. Otherwise I would have said to do what I did and move the surrounds to the mid point in the room and put the rear surrounds where the current 5.1 surrounds are.
You might want to consider putting the rear surrounds up on the ceiling above the rear couch or putting the rear surrounds where the current surrounds are and put the new mid point surrounds on the rafter in the middle of the room angled down. Neither solution will give a much more broader sound stage without having the missing wall to use, but who knows if that ceiling pointing down could add something. You would have to make sure the keyhole screw holding it was VERY snug and then use a stop screw into the ceiling to keep it from sliding off the keyhole mounting so it didn't losen over time and drop on someone's head. Another alternative would be to stick with a 5.1 setup but use the front "B" channel and just expand the front sound stage by placing the extra surrounds up very high along the main display wall (maybe try it easily on the outside top of the wall unit as a simple test). I use to have such "presence" speakers up high to add a more 3D sound immersion from the front sound stage when I had a 5.1 setup kitty-corner. Certain sounds really added to the front sound stage depth when I had this so it may work for you also. BTW, what brand/model are those couches? They look nice and I am possibly returning the console seating I have as defective with over 7 tech visits to fix issues with my Catnapper seating pictured in my link which I have 2 sets of: http://www.thefurniture.com/store/Cat_Cinema_sofa.htm

I believe you would be much better server by staying with a 5.1 system as a 7.1 system would be of no benefit considering your seating positions and room configuration.

I would agree with Loves and PFC that a 7.1 for your room configuration and size would not be a good fit. Perhaps the focus sould be into better positioning of the rear surrounds and or mounts that allow you to adjust them better. More spead out and adjusted down twords the sitting area. They don't need to be ear leavel like the fronts, but closer than that. And clean it up a bit by running the speaker wire behind the wall (or a least use white cable).
Here are some inexpensive mounts that will do if you decide to go that route. http://www.monoprice.com/products/se...speaker+mounts
