Default Help me with my 7.1 setup please! Back Speaker dilemma

Okat the first picture(3558) is a pic of another person's setup for his 4 back speakers. Im going to have a 7.1 BTW

My couch like his sits against the wall and my wife doesnt want to move anything

Would that still be an ideal setup? Ill sit probably 2-3 feet away in the middle of my couch

the last 3 pics are of my house/couch

my question is will the sound still be great if I set it up like the first picture is?

If you had a solid wall behind the couch I would say mount the 2 rears up a couple of feet but since you don't I would just go with a 5.1 because most movies are 5.1 anyway and there are very few in 7.1 so you really won't benifit from having the rear surrounds. IMO.

i already bought 7.1 :/ and pro logic IIx can matrix my games to 7.1.

Say I move my couch up a bit and give 3 feet Diagonally from the back of my head for the rear surround and still put the side surrounds 3 feet away

will that be "better"

I know its not perfect but I just want a good 7.1 sound

Well you can try that and see how it sounds. You do know that even if it is a 7.1 system you can hook it up as 5.1, just don't connect the rear speakers and choose 5.1 material.

Thumbs up 7.1 system

The best thing to do is trial and error. In other words, try a few different positions for your speakers and see what sounds best to you.

I too agree with the previous two responses. The key is, based on my experience, is to have your rear channels up and behind you as much as possible. I, like you, don't have the luxury of a deeper room to mount my rears. In your case though, moving your couch out a couple of feet might help achieve a "rear" affect. Additionally, like "tcarcio" said, mount your speakers up and away a bit so that they aren't necessarily aimed directly at your ears. Beyond convincing your wife that moving things around a bit would be the best option, you'll just have to adjust/re-adjust the levels until they sound as natural as possible.
