Default Onkyo TX-NR905 Questions

Hopefully loves2watch or another knowledgeable Onkyo fan is out there. I have a couple of questions about the onkyo tx-nr905.

1) I know it has 2 HDMI outs and that you can only use one at a time but does it have separate video adjustments memory, in particular scaling (upscaling SD to 720p on one output and 1080p on the other) and do any of the other picture adjustments possible with the Reon chip hold for each output or do they 'share' settings between the two?

2) Can you use both the onboard amplifiers speaker terminals and the pre-outs simultaneously or is it one or the other?

3) If adding external amps (using as pre-pro) do you have to add all at once or can I add/upgrade as time and cash permit. Meaning can I use a 2 channel amp for the fronts using the 905 for the center and surrounds until I can add additional amps.

4) Should I expect to see a noticeable difference between the upconversion that this unit provides versus my Sony BDP-S550 doing the upconversion. I would hope that the satellite upconversion of SD is better than my TV (Panny 800u) provides.

5) It is rated at a little higher power than my speakers Paradigm Monitor series are. As long as I don't drive it too hard should that be a concern?

6) Am I correct in assuming this would be a significant upgrade over my TX-SR606 even though I am losing Audessy2 EQ Loudness correction that was introduced in the xx06 models?

The reason I ask is that I am getting one that was damaged in shipping and supposedly all video functions work but 'there is no sound'. I will be taking to Onkyo service center next to where I work and getting it repaired but if it costs more than I can afford at the moment I may use as pre-pro.

As always thanks a lot guys!

Found answers to 1, 2, & 3 in the manual. Still hoping for a response on 4, 5 & 6 also the manual reads as if upconversion is only possible when transcoding/switching from analog source to HDMI is HDMI to HDMI upconversion possible?

5) It is rated at a little higher power than my speakers Paradigm Monitor series are. As long as I don't drive it too hard should that be a concern? Paradigm speaker ratings are conservative so I believe you will do no harm as long as you don't overdrive to the point of distortion them or send extremely high signal levels of noise.

6) Am I correct in assuming this would be a significant upgrade over my TX-SR606 even though I am losing Audessy2 EQ Loudness correction that was introduced in the xx06 models? Absolutely! A far superior unit.

Hope this helps.

HDMI to HDMI upconversion is not an option nor needed. Most devices with HDMI outputs do their own upconversion if needed. And in the case of Blu-ray players and HD DVD players they do a pretty darn good job. The new Oppo BDP-83 Blu-ray player is spectacular when upconverting SD DVD's via HDMI. In fact, I have seen nothing better that doesn't cost 35K and even then it's debatable.

Did that answer your questions?

L2W - as always thanks for the answers. I am a little disappointed though as my sat/dvr is set for passthrough and I was hoping to take advantage of the superior upscaling of 480p SD programming afforded by the 905 without having to use extra cables but it looks as if I will be reverting to component cables and toslink or digital coax for sound to give this a try. More damn cables to manage though

Yes but component does give a very good signal for the Onkyo and it's Reon chip to upscale...
