Default QAM modulators?

Is anyone aware of any QAM modulators in the consumer-ish market? IE: stuff not designed for head-ends with the ensuing price tag?

I've had for years a SD modulator network in my home, and i'm slowly moving all the TVs to HD and the local SD channels obviously look rather shitty, so I want to preserve the same type of setup mirroring selectively the SD stuff in HD, any ideas for hardware that won't run me like 5000$/channel?

Not that I have seen. There are copy protection issues as well as the expense of the equipment. I don't think you will see the equivalent ever. U-verse and others have the whole house DVRs and that seems to be the route everyone's going.

I have my house wired for component distribution everywhere and with the use of matrix switches I don't have the issue that you have.

There really wouldn't be a copy-protection issue here for me, i'm basically running stuff from a media-center type thing (custom software).

What kind of hardware are you using (specifically what do you use for the long component runs? -- baluns over cat5?) if 5000$/channel is my option, I guess a matrix switch (I really guess I only need to redo the distribution network at this point -- i wouldn't need a switch just yet) are a better option.

You don't enter into their copy protection reasons. If anyone could use a HD modulator to circumvent copy protection they won't make such a device. They don't worry about SD, only HD.

I use coax cables for my setup, but it was done before the cat5e balun devices were available. I have installed several of the Key Digital baluns and they work very well. Specific models are available here: A/V Distribution Wiring
