I have a Magnavox(Phillips)42" LCD TV with ATSC/QAM tuner
42MF531D/37. I have had it connected with HDMI cables for six months now. The high def picture was great until just recently .But now when I am using high def and hdmi and that includes Blu Ray and DirecTV the picture is slightly off center and I have a green line on the right side of the screen. As I select a recorded program from the DVR to play it instantaneously goes green then back to the almost normal picture but with the 1/4 inch vertical line at the right of the screen. I have tried replacing HDMI cables. I have used other sources for the high def signals such as the Blu Ray but same thing happens. Over the air High Def picture is fine but no HDMI cables used in that situation. If I route the picture with other type of cables no green line but also no hi def. Any thoughts? Thanks |

Have you tried red/green/blue component cables. They send the same HD signal as HDMI and may work. The problem could be the HDMI input on the tv going bad, the HDMI cable needing to be replaced. Either way, using component will work and may eliminate the problem.
If the tv is still under warranty, you should get the HDMI input checked out. |

I thought that component cables were one under HDMI? Was I mistaken?

As in inferior? No. You should see little to no difference in PQ using component cables.

Red/green/blue component cables are not inferior to HDMI. Just remember to calibrate the component input if you do a comparison to HDMI. They require different settings, but once properly set, the quality is equal. On most HD tvs, the settings for different inputs do not carry from one to the other, so each needs proper set up for best pic.

I could see how the poster above would say he thought component was below HDMI. On the Tiger Direct/CompUSA websites in their description for the HDTVs they sell, towards the bottom of the page, they say just that. It's never established from their advertising that they're equal. I guess it's just a ploy to sell those high priced, cheaply made Monster Cables... Misleading advertising strikes again....
