Default AVCHD Storage Folder Help

I want to transfer original AVCHD files from my 8 GB SDHC card to my 1 TB removable hard drive for storage. I've attached the AVCHD file folder structure FYI. I think all I need to do is rename the folder named AVCHD (not the subfolders or files) so they don't get overwritten when I transfer files from my SDHC card to my hard drive the next time. Does it matter which software (e.g., Corel VideoStudio X2 Pro) I use edit videos on my removable hard drive? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Did your camera come with any software? Typically the import feature of the camera software will have a process of transferring the files from the camera to a directory of your choice in a way that will prevent duplication of files. Typically you do not need all of those folders to just edit the files. All you need is the XXXX.MTS files. Nothing else. The rest of the files are database type files for your camera to keep track of what is on the camera and any play lists you may have created.

The software shouldn't matter as to which you use to edit. They should all be fine editing off an external drive.

Yeah, all you need is the MTS files.

I don't use the software that came with mine - its not that great and doesn't really do anything I can't do manually.

What I do after copying the files over is rename the files based on what I was shooting. I use a program called batch renamer for that.

if you ever have to edit on a mac, you'll probably need the entire directory structure, or you may not be able to import the video to the computer.
