Shortly after the FX1 came out Sony launched an expensive HDV tape that was supposed to be better than DV tape for capturing HDV.
Has anyone tried both yet? Is there really a difference? If so, is there less artifacts (so claimed by Sony) than DV capture of HDV? |

so far, yes. 1 dropped frame and you're out 15. I tried a regular tape against their pro tape in my zu1. no dropped frames with the pro tape. 1 with regular. Not really conclusive. I stocked up on the pro tapes when I bought the camera. my test tape has survived 3 generations without fail. I wouldn't ever suggest pushing a tape format when hard disk space has gotten so cheap.
someone will release a competing tape soon that will claim to be the same, we'll see. lewis |

To vanewis: Did you notice any difference in the reduction of "artifacts" when using HDV tape? That was my understanding when I first read about the reason behind the higher priced HDV tape. thanks!

my understanding is that the HDV tapes are "wetter" with lubricant than the standard tapes.
i recall reading somewhere that switching back and forth between tape types is the worst because of incompatibilities in the lubricants. it makes sense to get tape transferred to a hard drive as soon as possible. in theory, you can then re-use the tape for new production, but i have only ever known one video production company that re-used camera tapes. Since the beginning of helical scan video, every improvement in recording quality was driven by an improvement in tape manufacturing. |

Tape improvements have included moving to a different iron oxide with higher coercivity and with smaller & more uniform partical size... same as improvements with floppy discs.
