I'm new to this hi-def camcorder stuff. I've browsed through the posts on this website and want to make sure my understanding is correct. Please help.
I recently purchased a standard def hard drive camcorder and am unhappy with the video quality, especially of my kids' basketball games (which I know will be hard to get good video with anything). I want to upgrade to a hi-def camcorder, possibly Canon hg10. BUT, am I correct in my understanding that I would not be able to burn those videos to a dvd unless I have a hd-dvd burner? I do have a fairly new Samsung dvd burner but I don't think it does hi-def. (Sorry don't have models right now, in a hurry). Then, even if I did get that burner, the dvd may not play in my dvd player. Although I think it should...it is a newer hi-def Sony dvd player. It does have an upconverter so if I burned the video using my regular burner would it play right in my player? So ultimately I need to spend quite a bit more money (new dvd burner and hi-def camera) to get an acceptable video quality. Am I right? Thanks So Much for any help. |

You absolutely need both a HighDef cam and a HighDef player to get HD output. The burner is another matter.
It's possible to burn HD data files to regular DVD media and play short HD content. For example, you could burn a HighDef DATA file to a regular DVD and have it play in HD on a PS3. But it won't play at all on a regular DVD player, no matter who makes it. If it's a Sony Blu-Ray player you have, check the specs to see if it will play mpeg-2, mts or m2t data files. We can be more helpful if you can get the model #s. You can get acceptable video quality without going HD; you just have to get rid of that Hard Drive cam. |

Thanks for your help acgold.
My dvd writer is Samsung SE-S204 and my dvd player is Sony DVP-NS75H. From what I could find, it appears I need a blu-ray player and/or a hd dvd writer....which I can't afford right now especially if I got a hi-def camcorder. I do know I can get better video quality with mini-dv but then I can't even fit a whole basketball game on one tape and the thought of having lots of tapes around and forwarding/reversing to find the spot you want to watch does not sound good to me. Are the dvd camcorders equal to mini-dv in picture quality? Although I really don't want that either but at least they would play in my dvd player and no forward/reversing tape. I guess I could put both mini-dv and mini-dvd on regular dvd. I'm thinking of just moving the the Pan SDR-H200 (had bottom of line SDR-h18 to start) and trying/accepting that. I'm just a novice looking to get good home videos of my kids etc. Or, which mini dvd/mini-dv would you recommend (I know this question has probably been on here 100 times)? |

Full HD Solutions can be quite expencive when you have to change over your entire DVD playing and burning system.
For most HD Cameras, you will have to buy either a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD Burner AND Player to be able to achieve Full HD on an optical disc. As said earlier, you are able to put HD footage on a standard DVD if it's as DATA. However most DVD players (read: all minus one or two?) will not be able to read this. One way around this problem is the JVD CU-VD40 Share Station, it is able to burn Full HD footage from any JVC HD HDD Camcorder to a standard DVD. You will get aprox 40 minutes on a Dual Layer DVD. These RRP for $649AUD (US prices are a bit cheaper than ours down under, check your local store) This is a small investment as it is able to not only play Full HD footage, but it can also burn it! You can either go directly from your camera, with the 'One Touch Burn' button, or you're able to edit your footage, plug the VD40 in to your PC and burn it from there. It will plug in to and HD tv via HDMI plug. Also has component and normal RCA aswell (although that wont be HD).
