Default Advice on NTSC HD Camcorder vs PAL for European HD LCD & USA Blu-Ray player

Hi folks,

I would be grateful if you could help with some advice on the exact issues of an NTSC HD Camcorder interacting with a European HD LCD set ( Philips 52PFL9632 ) and how it will interact with a Blu-Ray burner & player.

I am based in Ireland but as a frequent traveller to the USA buy all my DVDs and Blu-Ray discs in the USA with currently a USA Blu-Ray player.

I have decided to go with the Canon HV20 and had planned to purchase this in the USA until I read recently about people's concerns about frame pulldown issues with an NTSC camcorder on a European PAL primary TV due to different frame rates. I thought that the new HD LCDs which handle the various frequencies but I am not sure with the new HD camcorders.

As my HD LCD TV indicates that it accepts 480i/p at 60Hz, 576i/p at 50Hz, 720p at 50Hz/60Hz, 1080i at 50Hz, 60 Hz and 1080p at 24, 25, 30, 50 and 60Hz

(a) will a Canon HV20 correctly display on the LCD TV when connected via HDMI and will it be the same quality as if it was a PAL HV20 ?

(b) would software like iMovie8 on an iMac handle both NTSC and PAL DV in the same way ?

(c) how will the 24fps mode of the canon HV20 appear on the Philips LCD ( assume Blu-Ray player would upscale it to 1080p as if it was a movie ? ) ?

(c) As I will be getting a Blu-Ray burner eventually to create USA region Blu-Ray discs would a NTSC based HV20 be needed or would it matter when it would come to creating a Blu-Ray disc of the HV20 HD material ?

Would really appreciate your guidance.

Warm Regards,
Kieran,
Ireland.

Cool NTSC v Pal on HV20

I called Canon to ask this same question,as I recently purchased a new HV20 for $619 online,I live in the USA,my brother lives in the UK,and he wanted one as it was half the price as the UK,Canon told me that they are different and that you should purchase one made for the Pal system.
