Default HV20 tape type

The Canon manuel states to use miniDV HD tape. I have heard that reg miniDV tape will work. HD tape costs about $11 each & reg version about $3. Can one use the cheaper version & if so are there any down sides doing so?
Another question-can one get HD signal from the component video output or does one need to use the HDMI output?

Any MiniDV tape will do. I use Sony Premiums, about $2.19 apiece, exclusively. Before that I used the TDKs available at Costco for about $2.50 each and they were perfect as well.

HDV tapes are theoretically constructed better to give you less chance of dropouts, but no one has offered any real statistical evidence that this is so. Picture will be the same regardless, as this is all digital.

You'll get HD out of component, but HDMI, being all-digital, is better.
